Leo Laport has stated that DTV and TIVO are friends again. Does this mean that we will finally get a decent 2 channel DTV HD recorder?

There already is one HR20/21. A pretty good system in many people's opinion.

I haven't seen Leo since the "Screen saver" days. Where can he be found?

there has been talk of a better relationship ever since Murdoch sold DirectTV and it is a waiting mode right now while the ownership transitions over. Forget when that finally, officially happens.
Myself I am waiting for news of an actual agreemnet to make a new DirectTiVo box, though not holding my breath

Yep. I listen to one of his many weekly podcasts, TWiT (This Week in Tech).

Right now...
It would be comparable to a divorced couple, that is being friendly to one other, for the sake of the kids.
Doesn't mean they will have any more kids together, but they will make sure that those that are out there are maintained and taken care of.

I'm a listener to TWIT and I don't recall this being on the show ? I also don' think Leo is someone who would be in the know in this area any more than the rest of us.
I like Earl's analogy, it's perfect for this situation.

I haven't heard anything like this on TWiT either but my memory could be faulty. Maybe he mentioned it in one of his other podcasts/radio show?

Damn Earl, what happens if they "accidently" sleep together and Tivo manages to get impregnated? Will DTV tell Tivo to do the unthinkable?

nope, the extended TiVo family will rejoice at the coming of little bundle of joy, mpeg4, and vow and affirm to bring the baby into their homes and hearts.

The problem is they are going to starve the kids to death and let them die an early death causing suffering for all.
Rather than nurture them and provide increased options for all.
Can't we get them arrested for child abuse.

not to be too graphic- but I would bet there was an MPEG4 directivo prototype on a bench someplace and Directv had tivo rip the power supply right out of it some months/years ago....
I dont even think rupert offered to drive the engineers with the tivo to the recycling facility to get the power supply pulled....

Good thing you didn't hold your breath.
According to Zatz, DirecTV just bought ReplayTV (http://www.zatznotfunny.com/2007-12/directv-buys-replaytv-huh/)
Maybe this explains why they haven't come out with their HD Dongle yet.

Gee we have been told by the DTV faithful they would never venture out again to another software platform.
I am waiting to hear the spin on this.

Could just be another way to avoid getting sued... BTW, here was the kiss, goodbye:
To: All D&M Employees
From: Eric C. Evans, Chairman & CEO
Date: December 13, 2007
RE: Sale of ReplayTV
Today D&M announced that we have sold ReplayTV® to DIRECTV, a US-based satellite television provider. D&M will continue to provide service to the current subscribers for the foreseeable future but will not solicit additional customers. All remaining assets, with the exception of the office space and some furniture, will be assumed by DIRECTV.
The employees at Replay have established themselves as a technology leader and achieved some remarkable breakthroughs in our industry. However, as we examined our strategic options for the company, we came to believe that the true value of Replay is better realized in the hands of another company.
I hope you will join me in thanking everyone at Replay for their service and wish them good luck in the future. In the meantime, at D&M, we will continue to build our brands and execute our growth and acquisition strategies.

Hmm,
So what kind of IP did replay TV have that protects themselves against the Tivo patents.
If this is a good tactical move I am wondering why Dish didn't do this a while ago.

Tivo and replay were suing each other on and off years ago. At some point they decided it was best just to cross license many of their patents instead of the continued bickering.
I assume that if directv owns replay that they get those same cross licensing rights?
is an interesting question why dish didn't do it? maybe duish was sniffing around and directv decided to block that out? Sort of like when the yankees sign players just to keep the red sox from getting them....

Sounds like a good strategy to me! :-)
I don't know what Replay/D&M might have had that was of any potential value. Who knows what they've come up with in the last seven years since they were originally bought. I'm just suggesting (since we are all speculating here, anyway) that just as there is a chance of them getting something useful out of the acquisition, there is always a possibility that DIRECTV might be clearing the path for something they are (or were) working on, as well.
Obviously, there is no way to really tell for sure until they announce their intentions, and even then, who knows?

it is possible that D&M went a courting any possible buyers and DirectTV saw a good bargain with those nice cross license agreements as useful no matter what happens with the tech itself

Charlie is and always will be a gambler. Anybody remembers $600 millions he lost trying to get government to approve his purchase of DirecTV? His gamble this time is that appeals court will overthrow Texas court decision. If he wins, he doesn’t have to waste money on Replay patents and cross-licensing agreement with TiVo. If he loses, he will offer TiVo development contract or licensing fees. He know that it isn’t in TiVo’s interest to shut him down and TiVo is desperate for cash. Worse case, he will replace 50X DVRs X22’s. 50X receivers are EOL products anyhow.
DirecTV , on other hand, always wanted to play it safe. The only reason they extended contract with TiVo was to avoid court costs. Now after they purchased Replay (effectively they purchased cross-licensing agreement with TiVo for peanuts), they can tell TiVo goodbuy for good after contract expires.

Obviously TiVo will be buying E* with the patent spoils and DTV is being proactive.
