Hi Guys, ive just moved house from a cable area to a non-cable area. First problem is finding a Freeview box (but thats a different thread) 2nd problem was updating tivo without a BT line.
I'm currently surfing the web with a 3G pcmcia Datacard in my laptop, on T-mobile PAYG web and surf, 1.00 per day for unlimited access. Ive already got tivo updated using Wingate and a crossover network cable, average of about 250Kbps. My question is can I re-run guided setup without getting stuck in a setup loop, is an update any different to a guided setup??
Cheers

No, I would take it to a friends to run the guided setup...
Also, please note that BT have a service called (IN Contact) which is basically a incoming only line for about £2.99 a month, this will allow outgoing 0800 calls.
They don;t like advertising, and I think it is a ofcom regulation that it is offered to people (I think conditions are that you do not have another provider or mobile, so watch out if they try and catch you out). Have you checked the Bt line, as they sometimes leave it connected with a ring tone, and it will allow 0800 calls?

Cheers for the advice, the BTline is dead, no dial tone and no voltage detected, the update was solid via 3G even though I only get 1/5 bars signal. Updating the listings for a cable platform only took 3mins and was 4.5mb. Its a bit of a hassle to take TiVo to a friends and as Im getting a line connected on wednesday I might wait till then.

Guided setup doesn't need a phone line on a networked tivo...

If you can do the daily call via the 3G mobile connection successfully I can't see why you should have any issues doing Guided Setup other than there is more chance a 3G data connection could drop out mid way through a larger Guided Setup data download. But the Guided Setup download is still not large in modern 3G mobile data terms.
However why not try it. If the worst comes to the worst you can surely always take the Tivo to a friend's house with a conventional wired broadband connection to have another go at completing Guided Setup.

Technically it does if your broadband has to come over a BT line :P
Seriously though I see no reason guided setup shouldn't work if updating over 3g through the laptop already works...

A guided setup over 3G worked great. I made sure I had a solid connection to T-Mobile before I started and it went through fine. This maybe a good solution for people using tivo in a mobile home or for someone like me who didnt have a phone line for a month or so.
I now have a BT line installed and am just waiting for ADSL to be activated. Im still updating my guide data via 3G ATM.
Cheers
