View Full Version : Sudden Tivo (and other device) pixelation

Noticed my new standard def sat receiver connected to CRT TV via RGB scart has started to "pixelate" a bit. Very light coloured blocks particularly noticeable on large areas of slightly different colours eg football pitch. Thought it might be the receiver but I've also now noticed it happening on my Tivo and XBMC. These are connected to 2 different RGB inputs on my TV. It's not down to content as the Tivo, satellite box and XBMC menus both show the same effect. I would say it's got worse since I first noticed it.

All I can think of that's suddenly causing it is either the TV (unlikely on a CRT?) or some sort of interference (again seems unlikely?). Have had a preliminary check of cables and all seems to be in correctly still.

I can only assume it's a TV problem at this point. Have fiddled with the settings and nothing looks out of the ordinary.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much.

Sounds like a normal MPEG compression artefact from your description? How big are these blocks.

Not really and I'm worried as it's only just started happening.

Looks more like large areas of a single colour when there ought to be more detail there. So, for instance, the Tivo clouds in the menu have a "shimmering" edge of tiny white pixels around them. A face would have say the cheek all one colour with the "shimmering" outline making it look flat.

It does look like low quality digital video but why suddenly and why across 3 different devices? I would expect something like this from a poor MPEG decoder on a specific device.

If it's a) happening on the TiVo animations and b) happening on non-TiVo sources then it must be a TV problem.

I'd take a guess at the scaling chip on the TV developing a fault.

Thanks mate. Have emailed Dixons and Toshiba re the issue. Hopefully they'll replace it with a nice shiny LCD.

I see similar with my V+ PVR.. its like a band of green pixels on high contrast edges (like a palette error) A reboot cures it.
