If I put a new THD side-by-side an older S2, will I have problems with the THD remote changing the S2, and the S2 remote changing the THD? The remotes have a little "DVR 1/2" switch on them. Can that be used to define which is which?
My intent is to install the two TiVos to the same TV set, where the older S2 is mainly for kids lower quality playback.
Yes, the manual has instructions on setting the remotes/Tivos so each remote controls only one specific Tivo.

You can use one remote to control both TiVos using the 1/2 switch on the remote. Instructions are on the TiVo support web site.

And except for a button or two, you can use either remote for both TiVos. Just program them the same way with the 1,2 switch.

hi, i need a little help on this feature. I have a THD and a Series 2 on the same rack. I programmed the "1" switch for THD and "2" for Series 2. The THD works as expected -- responding to 1 only, not 2. The Series 2, however, responds to both positions, even though it says its position is "2".
I've set, reset, set, reset, and set. nothing works. I called Tivo customer service, and was told that's how Series 2 works. Just use somthing to cover it up when needed?!
Any ideas?

I just did this last week with a S2 and a THD without any trouble. Just make sure when you are programming that you completely cover up the front of the other Tivo. It sounds to me like your S2 also received the signal when you tried to program Position 1 to control your THD. If that isnt the issue then I do not know, I just know it should work.

LOL! I've come today with specific remote questions too!

Lots of people have gotten it to work so don't give up! One point I've seen reported is that the System Information screen is "special". If the TiVo is on this screen and receives a signal from a different remote/remote_setting (not intended for it), it often resets this TiVo. It's important to change off of the System Information screen once you've finished setting the remote setting for that TiVo.

thanks for the encouragement. I tried again today. And it actually worked! must have been doing something wrong before. Thanks again.

If the TiVo is on this screen and receives a signal from a different remote/remote_setting (not intended for it), it often resets this TiVo.The System Information is special, it'll always reset your code. Whatever remote code its exposed to it switches to. Whatever you do, don't leave the TiVo sitting on the system info screen while you do something to the other TiVo.
The instructions in the manual basically come down to go to the system information screen and expose it to the remote code you want it to use.
I had to set this up for my new THD as well a few weeks ago and ran into a bit of an issue the first time (read: user error). Remember that the System Information screen also shows the remote code that the Tivo is currently using. So before anyone starts pulling their hair out, scroll down and look at the code to compare it to the other Tivo. If the numbers are the same or its set at 0 then there you go, it needs to be programmed again. Remember to take the other Tivo off of the System info screen first though!
