Hi everyone, I bought a HR10-250 off ebay today and I would like to ask you if you knew which are the HD channels that I can receive with this DVR once I activate it? I know that DTVs new DVR gets more HD channels but I would like to know how limited my box will be.

And in the new year along with Shrinking Services....higher prices... I am sure at some time in the future D* will be a case study at Harvard Business School.

Shrinking services? I'm not sure how you came up with that one but last I checked, they ADDED about 80 HD channels to the lineup. Not sure how that constitutes shrinking.

They added MPEG4 channels. This thread is about MPEG2 channels, which are the only ones that the HR10 can receive (not counting OTA). The number of available MPEG2 channels is expected to shrink as DTV eventually migrates them to MPEG4.

And the 150,000 or so HR10-250's left out there...
And the the upgrades to the non-dvr MPEG-2 receivers out there.
It is would go in a by line, of the evolution of technology.

Um, he made it as a business issue.
DirecTV is not the first business that required an upgrade to get new services or even to continue the current services.
Gee, one of the biggest companies in the world does that all the time....Microsoft. Go try loading Vista on a four year old PC.
In fact, DirecTV has maintained legacy hardware support far longer than most companies ever will do. Boxes from the 1990s will still run. You won't get all the services but they run.

Yeah, the HR20 army can really be proud of D* -
1. they get rid of the world leading Tivo
2. they force a 2-year commitment
3. they don't offer a trial program
4. they have a $480 charge if you don't like their product
5. they come out with second-rated products
6. you have to call 29 times to get a 'deal'
Yup, I'd say D* is really a leading company all right - just not sure which direction:confused::confused:

We have Vista running on three 5+ year old Celeron Dell Laptops in our training department with 764 shared MB mem and it's working fine for internet, word & excell (of course I wouldn't dare try to run Call of Duty 4 on it). :)

...try loading Vista on a four year old PC...
Try loading Vista on a 4-day old PC.
Then you'll see why a lot of PC vendors are replacing it with XP just so they can sell the PC in the first place.

you may need a different dish also! - If you are going to buy a dish off ebay, get a 5LNB, so you'll be ready for the next switch. Neither of these will fit on the old mount, so add that to the list!

1. In who's opinion? Not mine. In my case, my HR20's are way out in front of the my HR10's.
2. They also have one of the lowest churn rates so the commitment isn't really affecting too many folks. Not to mention that it's hardly a deterrent considering the prorate.
3. Who in this industry does? Does TiVo?
4. What? Is this back on the 2 year commitment idea?
5. In your opinion. Not mine. You know what they say... Opinions are like a.. holes... Everyones got one.
6. I called once and didn't even have to ask. I got three HR20's for $19.95 shipping each. Again... 1 call and I didn't ask for a deal. This was their initial offer.
So, yes... I think they do have something to be proud of... A better product, way more HD than their nearest competitor and lower prices!

Here's an interesting situation:
I'm a DirecTv customer since 1996
I have 5 receivers - all TiVo based DVRs - one HR10-250
I pay over $80/month even with Lifetime DVR waiver
I'm in the SF/Bay Area DMA, I have LA National HD Network Channels, East Coast SD Networks, SF Local SD Networks, HD Package
I have not received one phone call, one e-mail, or one letter offering me any upgrade offer to any of the new MPEG 4 hardware. Seems awfully odd

1. It's not just my opinion. There are several polls showing the HR20 behind the Tivo in acceptance. Even the biased poll that was on this forum showed a large number (it probably would been around half or more, if those of us who opted not to get the HR20 would have been allowed to participate) not liking the HR20 compared to Tivo.
2. I believe that the churn rate for the Tivo was about a 1/3 of the current churn rate, so I doubt if you're going to get much lower then that. Of course, the other factor when considering churn is that the HR20 has only been on the market a little over a year and some folks are reluctant to pay a termination fee.
3. Yes, Tivo has a 30 day policy. Of course the cable companies allow you to return the box as well.
4. If there products and service are so good, why even have a 2 year commitment - especially for customers like me who have been around for a long time? Why do they now have to raise the fee to return the box, when the box is costing them less then a few months ago?
5. See 1 above.
6. You are a perfect example of the inconsistent service and offerings. You can read elsewhere on this forum of how many times people have had to call - and then they get different results, yet you only call one time - why? All that kind of thing does is make people more upset with bad service.
An example: I used to subscribe to NFLST and last year had gotten the Superfan (HD) add-on for free. I called DirecTV to inquire if that was going to be free again this year and was told it wasn't. I then canceled the package. Later, I read on this forum where folks were getting the SF for free. Someone else discovered that even though they had canceled the package, it was still on the bill and sure enough the same thing happened to me. So, then when I called the second time to cancel the package, they offered me SF for free. That's poor service - plain and simple!!
The only thing DirecTV has going for them is the new HD channels. How long will that bandwagon last?

Universal HD, TNT HD, Discovery HD, HDNM, & HDN
Depending where you are, you may get the NY or LA ABC, CBS, NBC, & Fox stations in HD. Whether you get one or none depends on whether your local affiliates will give DTV their permission. If any of your local affiliates are owned by Hearst I can tell you they will not allow you to watch KNBC or WNBC.

RS4 - Just out of curiosity... Are your opinions still based on NEVER having used the HR20? Because maybe, just maybe, people would actually listen to something you said if there was any basis for it.
Wake up and deal with the situation. You have an irrational, unsubstantiated opinion about the new DVR's? That's fine, but don't spread it around like it's fact. The truth is that the vast majority of people don't have any issues with the HR20. You can choose to believe that or not. I don't really care. But, again, your opinion is meaningless since you've never even used one!
DirecTV can't keep up with demand right now. If the product is bad, we'll see significant churn within the next few months. I doubt that will happen, though, since the product is better than what it is replacing. Any objective person can see that the HR20 is at least equally good at what it was built to do - record a users shows reliably and without error. Some people claim that the HR20 is unreliable. These same people seem to forget the problems that the HR10 has had (and is having) with recording reliability and system stability. I don't have any of those problems with my HR20s. The only valid arguments against the HR20 have to do with subjective items such as features or processes. These are subjective since each person is going to have a different opinion about how something should be done. Some people don't like the picture in the guide but others do. That makes the feature subjective - not good or bad.
I know none of this gets through to you. I wonder, though... Do you base everything in your life on other peoples thoughts? Maybe you should try forming a first hand opinion before dismissing the product.
To each his own, I guess...
