View Full Version : Suspending Acct - Disconnect box first ??

I've decided to suspend my account until I can get locals in HD. At that point I will argue with D* about replacing my HR10-250. If they won't give me a free or nearly free HD box at that point I will just cancel. Today I am getting locals in HD through TWC with a SA 8300HD with Passport and I am very happy with it. It's not a Tivo, but it works.
My question is - I have a lot of content on my 3 DTivos that I want to watch. Do I need to do anything to the boxes before suspension? Pull the cables? Remove the access card?
I understand that I can get past the welcome screen by hitting the Tivo button on the box. Is that a 1 time thing? What exactly happens if I suspend my boxes while still hooked up with an access card in them?
Any help would be appreciated.

It doesn't make any difference. If it makes you feel safer then it might be worth disconnecting the satellite and phone line but it won't matter.
You get the nag screen, you have to bypass it once per day I think.

Correct, all that happens is the guide will run out and the nag screens will start, but the content will be there for you to view.

I too also thinking of supending my account. This would be for 2 months while out of town. However, I have been watching without a phone line hooked up to my Directivos since we are all cellular. Does anyone know if I will have to hook up the boxes to a phone line again for them to make a call to restart them again after the suspension is over? Thanks

You do not need a phone line to reconnect. They just authorize your unit via the satellite.

I just talked to one of the customer services reps this morning about this same issue. Now we all know how much they really know about how the DirecTivo's work anyway, but I asked anyway.
I will be replacing my standard DirecTivo with a HR10-250 and I asked specifically if I needed to add my new HR10-250 as a "new" receiver or as a replacement. I was told by the customer service rep that once they deactivate the DirecTivo I will NOT be able to watch any of the shows that I have recorded on it.
I chose to make the HR10-250 a new receiver until I can watch all the shows on the old DirecTivo. Then I will cancel the old DirecTivo and place it on ebay.

They were wrong. This only applies to directv's new dvr boxes. Tivo's will play back previously recorded shows until the box itself is dead.

This seemed like a good thread to ask this question...
I have an old SAT-T60 I want to deactivate but still access the considerable amount of programs recorded on it. I have no landline phone service (so no phone connection), but the TiVo has a CacheCard and has been making its calls over the Internet. It won't be connected to the dish any longer of course, but I want to keep it on my network to use TiVoWeb, etc. Under this scenario is there any chance I won't be able to access the programs as a result of removing the box from my account? Should it be necessary to configure my firewall to prevent the TiVo from accessing the Internet?
Thanks in advance!
