I have an HDTV, a new Series 2 Dual Tuner, and Dish Network.

Is there anyway I can watch channels in HD whilst having the Tivo connected and doing its thing. I don't care if the Tivo is recording in HD.

I just want to be able to watch live TV in HD.

Is this possible?? Maybe with some sort of splitter?

What model Dish receiver do you have? I assume it has both a component (HD) outputs and composite and/or s-video (SD) outputs.

Connect the component from the Dish receiver directly to a component input on your HDTV.

Connect the composite to the Tivo. Run the output from your Tivo to another input on your TV.

The Tivo will be not be able to record a different show if you watching something live. But it will record shows quite happily in SD when your not home.

Greg,

Don't have the HD receiver yet. I was holding off until I could figure out the Tivo issue. I assume with the set up you mention the Tivo will record whatever I'm watching?

So, basically if Tivo is recording something I'd have to watch it, but I'd be watching in HD?

PS

I'm guessing they'd send me the ViP211. The specs on that are:

A/V CONNECTIONS
• 1 H
DMI digital audio/video output
• 1 set of Component (Y P
r Pb) video outputs
• 1 S
-Video output
• 1 set R
CA-type audio/video outputs
• 1 Channel 3/
4 modulated output
• 1 optical digital output for Dolby Digital and
PCM Digital audio

Does your suggestion still work if I use the HDMI connection?

I assume you have decided against just getting the Dish DVR. It is supposedly very good. (Although not a Tivo ;))

It would allow you to record mutiple (2?) channels at once in HD while watching a third previously recorded program.

Yes, the Tivo (which is always recordings to the buffer) would be recording whatever channel you have the Dish receiver tuned to. :(

Not an ideal setup, but workable. Do some research (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&channel=s&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=site%3Ativocommunity.com+ViP211&btnG=Search) and make sure an S2 can control that Dish receiver via IR blasters. I don't know. I'll dig up the thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=128743).

You would be watching it in HD if you were not viewing the TV input the Tivo was connected to.

The HDMI connection wouldn't change anything. That is from the Dish receiver to the TV. Does not even play a part in your S2 Tivo connection.

Edit: here is a confirmation that that receiver is controllable via IR with S2

I am making the assumption that the Dish receiver has both HD and SD output active at the same time. I think that is a safe bet, but not positive.

I had a HD cable box set up for a long time to my S2 and recorded in SD, while watched live in HD.

Actually I preferred the Tivo viewing experience more than I did the HD one. The S3 solved that dilemma for me. :)

Yeah, I didn't know I was getting an HDTV until after I got the new Tivo to replace a dying one. So, I was hoping there would be a work around.

Sounds like what you are suggesting will work for me assuming as you said that the Dish Network unit has both HD and SD output active at the same time.

When I had my S2 connected to the HD cable box it even preserved the wide screen aspect. Not HD, but it was the best picture my S2 ever recorded.

If you are currently making the choice of HD receivers, chose an HD receiver that suits your fancy, and a separate single tuner SD receiver for the TiVo to control.
