I need some info pertaining to these S2 ST medel 540 units.
Can they be used with OTA only? what about next year after the switchover to digital?
I suppose they can be hooked directly to TWC coaxial for up to channel 99 or something....and be used with a TWC box via serial cable for premium channels?
Lastly..I guess, can also be used for satellite service with "their" box?
I think I've covered everything haven't I? Thanks for your informative responses

They can be used with OTA, but not after the switchover. Then you'll need one of the converter boxes, and TiVo will need to add the ability to control them, just like they do a cable box now. They haven't done that yet, as basically no one has them yet, but it seems fairly likely to me that they will.

Correct and correct.

Yes, with the same type of setup you'd use for a cable box on cable.

Thanks Fred for the prompt, concise response. I overheard someone saying the government will be passing these converter boxes out and/or you get a rebate for the purchase price? ($40.00)?
I presume they would only be needed for OTA transmission and each analog Tivo box or tv would require one in each household....?
It does seem to me at least that "most" everyone probably is already a subscriber to cable or satellite services..unfortunately...:(
One more question, I just recently hooked up a couple S2ST's with a 1yr prepay to Tivo, if I was to get another TivoHD..could I simply replace the S2ST and change that TSN over on the manage page for the HD and have it work correctly for the remainder of the 1 year prepay? Thanks

It is not next year. It is Feb. 17, 2009.

Oh yea, I meant a yr from now for the switchover....forgot next year is 2008.

The switchover is happening now, it is just the current mandated turn-off of analog broadcasts is the Feb17,2009 date.
I am not entirely sure of the voucher deal, but it involves you purchasing the tuner box, using the voucher as cash when you purchase, or getting reimbursed afterward.
From what I see, some sub $100 boxes are on the market now, although I don't know if they are voucher eligible, when that program kicks off. Of course, there are plenty mid-high end OTA tuners on the market and has been for years.
Yes, those boxes (which you'd need one per TV set and/or video recorder), are needed for OTA, since they are simple tuners.
For cable, you get a cable box, which you can get now.
For satellite or IPTV, you are already using a box.
Yes, most TV viewers receive their TV through a pay service which provides a box that TiVos already work with.

This is the only thing I haven't seen answered directly, so... yes, its only for OTA. And each tv/TiVo would require one.
