HD tuner capaibility

If I have a rcvr given to me that has an HD tuner built in can I use the HD tuner part without subscribing to the Directv service and adding it to my account? I have enough rcvrs but I wanted to see how well I can receive OTA HD signals and this would be a cheaper route than trying to buy a $75-100 digital-analog converter?

I havent found any info that says if that part of the unit works without being on a directv account?

Any ideas?

Assuming this is a DTiVo, the tuner will work, and you can even do "trick play" features, but no recording and no guide data.
