Does anyone know what was changed between software versions 6.2 and 6.3? If we knew that, maybe it would be easier to understand why we are having so much trouble with 6.3.
As an aside, next week I will be putting another DSR-708 into service. However, this one has the 6.2 software and you can be sure it will never be attached to a phone line. So I will have two Philips DSR-708's with identical 300 GB Maxtor drives that I installed myself, both running on the same dish and multi-switch. It will be very interesting to watch how they compare with the freezing, pixelization, color changes, etc. I am assuming the unit with 6.2 will hum along perfectly. If this experiment plays out as I expect, I will bring the 6.3 unit back to 6.2 also. That seems to work for other folks.

But... I wonder just which version did DTV issue to accomodate the revised guide data?
Said guide data being the cause of the problems back at the beginning of the year
I don't know, but you MAY just be switching one problem for a different one

Since switching back to 6.2a my HDVR2 has run flawlessly.
It is worth the nag messages to have flawless recording and no reboots.

I believe your Phillips receivers are identical to my Samsungs internally other than the drives. I had installed WeaKnees Seagate DB35.3s in each on July 2, 07. My second unit which mostly has the tuners on CNN and MSNBC rebooted a time or two as far as I know in the week after I received the "Update" message from DTv. On August 31st my primary unit received the update and promptly started rebooting and I knew the **** had hit the fan. So started keeping a log.
The rest is history. On the third week of September the Seagates w/6.3e came out and the 40GB 6.2a drives went back in. Not a single reboot on 6.2a. As a test I put the unit 2 Seagate w/6.3e back in and had at least one reboot in the following week.
Both of my Seagates were returned to WeaKnees to remove 6.3e. They are now running 6.2 not 6.2a as I had thought. Looking back at my notes, the original 40GB drives were running 6.2a.

Who are the people making the changes to the code? Is it Tivo technicians, or does DirecTV do it themselves?
Its just strange that this same problem (constant reboots, freezing) also happened with the DTV-branded DVRs. Is there some connection?

6.2a fixed the guide issues and the new daylight saving time. 6.2a is just 6.2 with bugs fixed. It retains the full functionality of 6.2.
To my knowledge, 6.3 did not fix anything, if anything it broke stuff.
6.2a is rock solid, IMO. I have not run 6.3 for much time, and then only on my spare box. I'm not ready to give up mrv for 6.3.

I've been using v6.2 in my HDVR2. When DST
comes around, I change the time zone setting
manually. Here in the Pacific zone I set it to
Mountain for half of the year.
If you are in the Eastern time zone, there is no
setting for the time zone one hour east of you to
choose.

6.2a fixed the daylight savings time problem.
Sorry for the newbie question, but could someone please post pointers for how to acquire or modify a SD unit so as to run 6.2 (or 6.2a)? Moreover, once this is done, how do you keep DTV from re-upgrading your software without violating their terms of use?

TedW, HDRV2Buy Instantcake from www.DVRupgrade.com for $19.99. It will install in less than 1/2 hour. after the initial settings are complete return to settings and under phone do connect to DVR service. When that completes disconnect the phone line. It will have installed 6.2a. If you want to order PPV do it through the website (www.directv.com)::)

You'll probably get 6.3e that way instead of 6.2a

If 6.3e was downloaded by one phone call to connect to dvr service it won't install unless you restart the recorder which I did not say to do. all it does on the first call is shows the account in good standing so you can watch and record programs. if it is like one month ago 6.3e downloads via satellite.:)

I set up a freshly imaged unit last week that downloaded 6.3e on the first call.

When you say "first call" do you mean the call that is sometimes required during the guided setup (when setting up satellite settings) or the first of the periodic 'daily calls' that get made?
From my recollection, on standard def unit, the only time you need actually make an initial call is when re-running guided setup from the start, and that won't actually download an updated version (or initiate the upgrade process). In addition, you really shouldn't need to completely re-run guided setup because you can change your satellite settings without having to do that.
Its been awhile since I've done it from scratch on an SD unit, but that is how I remember it, FWIW.

What was the issue with the guide? I just got a brand new R10, with firmware 6.1 and the guide is slow as hell. Is that the issue that was fixed with 6.2?
