phone line and season pass

Do I need a phone line to use the season pass? If I do then can I convert the phone line coming out of the tivo into an ethernet box so I can use broadband to connect instead of landline.

On certain models it is possible you can use the internet, since you did not mention yours it is impossible to answer your 2nd question.:(
