View Full Version : TiVo Serie 2 and HD Receiver from DirecTV

Hello all here and thanks in advance for your attention.
I just switched to DirecTV from Comcast because of their HD lineup (and other things ...) and everything is just great.
I have now a TiVo Serie 2 that works fine and an HD receiver from DirecTV, they work fine together.
The only problem is that the HD receiver has a channel lineup that is not recognized by the Tivo ... in fact there are two channels with the same number, one is for the HD one and the other is for the regular broadcast.
Now, when the Tivo changes the channel to record something, let's say on channel 5, the HD receiver goes to the HD version of the channel 5 and not to the "regular" channel 5. It may not seem a problem, but the HD broadcast is not always "full screen" like the "regular" broadcast and the picture is cut or distorted (it depends if you use the letterbox or crop or stretch adjustement).
It looks like DirecTV changed the software some weeks ago to allow more HD channels on their lineup and Tivo didn't follow up because it cannot have more than one channel the a certain number (it makes sense, anyway).
Anyone with the same problem ? Any solution?
Thanks for your great job here !
Max

Since you "just switched" to DTV, that would indicate that you do not have one of the DirecTV with (powered by) Tivo receivers discussed here

The new style DirecTv receivers are at

Actually, he has a DirecTV receiver but NOT a DirecTV DVR. Still the wrong forum, but that's ok. The "Help" section here would be more appropriate.

The DirecTV HD receivers preferentially go to the HD version of a channel presented in both formats. The only way to go to the SD version is to hit the channel-down button on the receiver remote.

Check on the receiver to see if there are different display modes for SD material - this may help. But really, I recommend using a HD DVR (non-TiVo at this point) unless there's something the TiVo is giving you that you can't live without. Using a standalone TiVo with an HD sat/cable receiver is a pain.

First of all, thanks all for your answers and sorry if I posted on the wrong section.
John, I don't have a "Directv powered by tivo" because I have already a tivo and, so far, works great for my needs (let's wait for XMas if I can get an upgrade ....).
Stevel, you are right, that's exactly my problem. I couldn't find any way to change the display mode for SD material and either the Tivo or DirecTV tech support were able to solve my problem.
I will check the link provided by John to see if there's any help for me there ...
