Anyone watching this? I loved last year’s series and this one is more of the same great stuff. Well, that is now that that reporter is off the summit team. Wow, was/is she annoying.
Anyhow, I'm really excited to see if that British guy can make it down the south side and back up again. No radio communication and no set lines.

I really want to see more of the grid of green lasers. Perhaps now that we're going up into the "death zone", they'll show more of the deadly, green lasers.

Oh wow, I didn't know they were doing it again! Gotta set it to record, I'm surprised Tivo didn't pick it up as a suggestion.

Yep. After catching last years version I was hooked. It is on my must watch the same night it airs list and many times will be watched a second time before the new episode airs.
Yeah, David Tait I think is his name, may have bitten off more than he can chew. My thinking is that if nobody has made it up the south side yet that season and they have no guide lines to lead them down the proper path then they could be in trouble.
Be interesting to see if either of our repeat climbers actually make it this year.
And will we find out if that stationary person they were watching near the summit has made it or died. It was not looking good.
As for the green laser looking things they use to show the Death Zone I much prefer that to the graphic of Tim's prior injuries on every episode.
For those that have missed it I believe last nights episode was the 4th.

Yup, I'm watching it. Loved last year's version so decided to do this years, too.
I only have an SD television but, still, the footage seems so much better this year. So much more vivid and clear looking.
Like some of the things they're doing this year such as spending time with the doctor and having a Sherpa give little tours of the food stocks and whatnot. Perhaps they did that last year, but I don't remember it.
Will be interesting to see how different a journey the big Tim guy has this year versus last.

Yeah, I don't think it looks good for Tim this year but I hope he makes it.
I also really like Moens (or whatever his name is) but like Russell pointed out, he seems to get weaker each attempt.
Regarding the guy they were watching that was stationary in the "death zone", yeah, it doesn't look good for him. I can't believe there are people that do this solo or even with very little support. Just like those two guys from Japan that didn't have any medical support.

And if any of you haven't read Into Thin Air yet, put it at the top of your list.

Discovery Channel. Like someone else stated, four episodes have already aired but they'll rerun them and most likely have a marathon toward the end of the short series.

Excellent book! I've read it twice over the years. Actually the book is what got me interested in this series to begin with. I had no clue they were doing another one! Definately will be watching!

I wouldn't have even known about and watched the first 'season' last year if not for TCF.

Not HD :( But looks good, so I ordered the first season from Netflix! And now have a season's pass for this year.

Not HD :( I only have an SD television, but at the beginning of each episode, a Dicovery message has been appearing at the bottom of the screen saying "This program also available in HD".
I found last seasons episodes earlier this year and once I started watching there was no stopping me. I watched all 6 episodes in one night.

Guess if you get the Discovery channel in HD, then the program is there. I don't get that Discovery in HD, so no joy for me....
They did replay some of this season's episodes this weekend, so I was able to get caught up. Interesting show, but gets a bit annoying how they show the same scenes over and over again.
I guess some people will put up with anything for $$$$...that's the only reason I can figure why Russell lets Tim hang around. His comments about being unable to get out of bed in the morning because he has metal in his body is just the biggest bunch of crap. He's lazy. And how did Tim get put on the fast team???? He's always last for everything! Sure hope he doesn't end up getting someone killed.

Wow a good episode. I'm so surprised that David decided to give up. Of course he was going to be tired......they have a grueling few days, but he could have at least waited 2 or 3 days before deciding he was still too tired to try again. He felt inferior when compared to Purba but that's to be expected because Purba grew up there and has done this his whole life. Couldn't they both be recognized as accomplishing this? I suppose there is always the chance that he will change his mind.
Yeah, I was surprised he made such a definitive call so quickly. I think he should have rested the three days and then made the decision.
There was a show on after it called After The Climb, which was a roundtable type discussion with some of the featured players from this years cast. I recorded all but the first few minutes but am afraid to watch it because I think it will contain spoilers on who made it and who didn't.

When I first heard Tait's reason why he wasn't going to attempt the double traverse, it sounded to me like he was *mad* that Purba was a better climber than him. Later, it was clear that he felt that it would have been unfair of him to "claim" the record when Purba probably could have turned around and gone back over the next day. Kudos for him for that.
I have no idea why they would air "After the Climb" before the series is even over. I watched about half and there were no spoilers. Betsy came on as well so it wasn't necessarily those who made it up. Tim almost made her cry by repeating his rant about how she didn't deserve to be on the mountain yadda yadda yadda. As if you do, dumbass ?? Russ kinda tore him a new one again, which was nice.
They also had a doctor named Luanne Freer on, who was the subject of another Discover Channel special last year about her founding of the first clinic at base camp. That was kinda cool as I met her 4 years ago in Namche Bazar, Nepal as she was heading back up for the 2nd season.
here's what Namche looks like:

Yeah this pissed me off. Last night I just happened to turn on the TV when this show had maybe 5 minutes left. It wasn't scheduled as part of the regular show, so the SP didn't pick it up. I did a search for it to try and catch it again, and Discovery's not re-airing it AT ALL.

Yes, I think Tim is a dumbass but he is endlessly more qualified than Betsy. That's one the problems with this type of thing. If you have the money they let you go. Someone who can't figure out how to put on crampons shouldn't be on the mountain and her fitness was so suspect that I can't imagine how she ever deluded herself into thinking she could make the climb.

I am still scared to watch it for some reason. I find it hard to believe that there was no mentions that would be considered spoilers on who made it to the top and who did not.
The After the Climb show looks like it will be on two more times, but they will be different episodes without the roundtable.
It would be nice if they included the roundtable on any eventual DVD release.

I gained have a lot of respect for Tait once he give his reason for ending the attempt to double traverse. He realized that if the record was set he would "unfairly" be in the record books alone while Purba wouldn't even be mention, only because he was the paid help. Tait would have never made the return trip without Purba, but Purba could most certainly have made the double traverse without Tait. It took a big man to realizing this.

Yeah, I was very impressed with David's reason for not continuing. It was something I'd imagine 99% of the other climbers would never think about. It really showed how much he respected Purba.

Could she be any thinner? I don't think she has an oz of fat on her, she also "looked" 10-15 years older them most there. I can't imagine how she deluded herself either.

Has Moens every summited?
I guess I can understand wanting to be the "first" to do the Everest as an asthmatic w/o oxygen thing, but I think I would just attempt to summit it however I could first and then go for setting a record the next time. He certainly seems fit enough to summit if he would use oxygen.

Yeah I don't get the mentality that he needs to do it without oxygen or not at all. Why not just get to the top with the oxygen to say he's actually summited? That's a major accomplishment in itself, especially for a person with asthma.
When David's oxygen tank ran out, he seemed completely out of it. He even said he couldn't believe doing it without the oxygen as soon as Purba set him up with the new tank.

I just finished watching the whole season. It was quite a ride! I missed the first episode so I let them build up while waiting for it to repeat. It finally did. And I watched them all last night and this morning.
I can't believe Mogens was so sure he could summit w/o O2. He barely did it WITH O2!
The amazing story of Everest is nothing to do with the self important blow hards that traverse the mountains. It's the heroic Sherpas that get them there and back. It's amazing how many times some of them have summited. It's all in a day work for them. They even had to lay ropes while they were doing it. The reason Russ has never lost anyone is because he sends one Sherpa with one climber. The Sherpa keeps them moving and on task.

This show is so amazing. I really wish I had Discovery HD because the views have got to be great. But anyways this show has always put me on the edge of my seat. It's so compelling to watch the difficulties of all the climbers. You're right that the Sherpas are really the stars of the show.
I'm really, really surprised that the motorcycle guy made it to the top with a broken hand! Wow! He deserves to be slapped for putting everyone in danger like that though. And then there was Mogens who almost died after the rope came out of the wall. I hope they have another season.

I didn't see the first season, but I just finished watching the 2nd season marathon that I recorded on Monday. What a great show! The HD footage was amazing, and even the widescreen SD stuff from the POV cameras looked pretty good.
My biggest complaint was David Tait's logic for not attemping the double summit. His motivation behind attempting it was to show abused children that they could accomplish their goals, but his logic behind cancelling the attempt equated to "And remember kids, if you can't be the absolute very best at something, don't even try to do it at all!" (I'm sure he probably didn't mean it that way, but that's how I initially interpreted it.

I wish I had discovery HD but comcrap doesn't give that to us...
I got a different meaning for why he didn't do it. I think he decided that by doing that, he was losing sight of the cause he was promoting and was instead doing something selfish. Additionally, when he realized that he would get the credit when his sherpa was really responsible he felt that would be wrong. When I watched the show, I didn't understand his logic but the way he explained it on "After the Climb", made more sense.

I don't like Tait's excuse at all. The Sherpa is given credit for the "first" along with the climber he escorts. Everything I've ever read gives Norgay credit along with Hillary for being the first to summit. Why wouldn't Purba be in the record books along with Tait??
If Tait just didn't want to try, didn't feel physically or mentally capable, or whatever, that's fine. But by backing out he cost Purba the chance at the record, too, so I don't get the "I'm not worthy" b.s.
It wasn't until the After the Climb show that I realized that non-Russell climbers were supposed to pay Russell ($100?) to use the ropes that Russell's Sherpas fixed. I was wondering about that while watching the show...why would Russell allow other groups to use his ropes and slow down his climbers? I guess if he's getting paid he can't kick them off the ropes. Personally, I be like "These are my ropes, go fix your own and get out of my way":D

The initial run is over. I looked on TiVo's online schedule and it looks like there are still some episodes playing on Discovery Times channel. I don't get Discovery HD so you could check your listings and see if there are any more showings.
