I have a pretty decent 25 inch crt tv. It is now in the basement idle. When the analog-digital switch occurs, there will be those converter boxes offered.

What kind of results could one expect hooking up the converter to the S2 Tivo to the sd crt? Would I get the same immaculate signals I now see on my hdtv (without hd, of course) rather than the ghosting, wavey, well, ota affected type of signals one now sees on analog crt-tv's?

Or should this crt be headed to the dump (recycling center)?

You will get extremely good pictures or none at all depending on your ability to pick up OTA signals. Digital TV is all or nothing. Whether the TiVO will have the software to control the converter boxes or not is yet to be seen.

Oh, I had not thought about the "converter box" being the TUNER. That is that the box would have to be tuned to stations as opposed to just grabbing all digital channels and making them analog (or whatever magic it will perform) and where the tivo would then tune. That is probably the glitch (although, I guess somewhere I have those "changers" that came with my S2.

I'm thinking free up the space in my basement!!!! Find a tv recycling center NOW!

Thanks for the quick reply.

The converter box will be small and cost approximately $50. If your OTA reception is reaonable, then your pictures will look excellent. It will look DVD quality. You will see pixelation issues if your reception is less than 80%.

I would keep the CRT just to see what it is going to look like. You can't sell it for any value, so enjoy the experiment.

Also don't forget that starting in January, the US Government will be offering discount coupons towards the purchase of basic digital OTA boxes. These subsidized boxes will be limited in their ability, such as not being able to output in HiDef, but if you have an old 25 inch TV you likely won't miss it. They also won't have DVR capability, but then that's what the TiVo is for.
