Wow I voted a couple days ago and TiVo was at only 13%, and in last place. Now it's at 33% and in a close second.
Dan
Even if it doesn't win, if you vote, you might get the chance to buy a discounted HD Tivo (although the discount wouldn't be as big as if it wins).

it is up to 34% now. I agree that even $150 is awesome. I will get one if I find it under $225 over the holidays

I voted for the TiVo. Blu-ray should be 1st. Those people wanting HD DVD just because it's cheaper are going to be really sorry in a year or two when it's sitting in storage with the VCR....

Wasn't Betamax Sony? It was "better" but VHS won because it was cheaper. So, I think your blu-ray player will be sitting in the closet with your Betamax!!!

I disagree with both of you. This is a war that isn't going to have a winner or loser. Both formats will survive and the real winner will be the first company to put out a hybrid HD DVD/Blu Ray player, which is coming out very soon...

I voted for TivoHD, I hope I get to buy one even if it loses the vote. Odds are very slim, and I never win anything so - anyone got $700 they can lend me? haha

I was sorely tempted by the Blu-Ray player (I already have HD-DVD), but I voted for the Tivo HD. Gotta represent, knowati'msayin? ;)
BTW, I'm surprised that the HD-DVD is beating the Blu-Ray, since there have already been cheap HD-DVD player deals out there. Maybe the presence of the PS3 in the first category is splitting the Blu-Ray vote?

That article is a year and a half old.
LG does have 2 dual format players available now; street prices between $600 and $1,000 each.
Way, way, way overpriced. At least Blu-ray is only way, way overpriced. :)
HD-DVD should win. All players support the Twin format DVD/HD-DVD disc where 3 layers are used on one side, allowing a release to use the same disc for DVD or HD-DVD playback... the perfect backward compatible method. There could be a pretty seamless transition going on right now if it weren't for a format war.

These HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray arguments are so odd - someone who has a Blu-ray takes a swipe at HD-DVD and vice verse. Here's the deal - neither will win, and you're both suckers. Both formats are heavily laden with anti-consumer copyright protection and DRM. Neither is any good, and will both ultimately fail. If you love DRM, and hate freedom, then buy your new DVD player. If not, pass on both new formats.

The whole Blu-Ray HD-DVD war is really going to start to get interesting over the next several months I have a feeling for Disney who has always withdraw from HD-DVD votes voted for approval of a preliminary specification of 51GB triple-layer HD-DVD media which could be a sign that might be considering selling movies in the HD-DVD format.
Which I feel would be a big blow to the Blu-Ray format for Disney is one of their exclusive studios.

Go back to the original topic (gotta love the BR/HD-DVD wars! :D)
Remember only a select number of people will be able to buy at that price and only if you voted for that item. I voted for the Tivo, so I am hoping Tivo wins and I get picked to purchase one.

See http://writersblocklive.com/boycott/ before you buy either format. If we stick with DVD, perhaps the crooks will reconsider their DRM schemes!

And then you have to pay the subscription which is why at the last moment I did NOT vote for the Tivo. I would rather get another device at a good cost that does not have monthly fees (or an overpriced lifetime)

What if downloadable HD content becomes a reality before Blu-Ray or HD-DVD gets a firm footing? I think I read somewhere that one format was touting its sales of a particular title as being double that of the other format. But the key takeaway was that the regular old DVD format of that title outsold both BR and HD by a huge multiple. It was like HD-DVD sold 3, Blu-Ray sold 6, and regular DVD sold like 300. It was a ratio like that.
I don't know if the market is like me or not, but I just don't care about either format. The other night I borrowed from a friend the little HD-DVD player attachment that plugs into an XBOX360. I watched Transformers on the HD-DVD format. Was it great picture quality, yes. Was it mind-blowingly better than the regular DVD of Transformers playing on my very affordable upconverting DVD player? No, not at all.
Just as has happened with music, I think content is finally being freed from media. We just need the bandwidth to move it from place to place, and we are getting there.

Lifetime at $399 is a bargain. If only I needed another hi-def TiVo. (Got 2 S3's plus a HDTivo, all Lifetimed!)

What happens in a merge is the earliest post is what the thread title becomes; someone needs to manually change that. You could just report the thread and ask a moderator to retitle the thread with your more descriptive title rather than ranting out in public about it. ;)
BTW, the thread at http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=374550 predates both of these and has over 90 posts. ;)

Sure enough, but again, a cruddy title. Nothing gets attention like TivoHD + $89...
And why is that in a non-tivo forum? This topic directly involves a Tivo..
I have never even looked at that forum because it says non-tivo topics!
Personally, I like ranting in public. Makes me feel....:)
I am thinking it does not matter. Those amazon numbers have not changed all day. Unless they only update only once per day...:(

I think soume of you missed this small print:
and the runners-up will also be offered to randomly selected voters at a smaller discount
So even if TivoHD loses it will still go to a select few at a low price, just not the super low price.

I think movies are much different than music. I'm still in my 20s but maybe I'm already old fashioned. I would MUCH rather have actual media to show for my forked over money than I would have a digital file that is stored on unreliable computer equipment. If I have a choice between downloading a movie or buying the DVD (or whatever replaces it) I'll buy the DVD 11 times out of 10. Even if it costs more. But that's just me.

Voted for the TiVo, but with the voting window almost closed, the TiVo vote is hanging at 36% and the HD-DVD vote still in front at 41%. As the Magic 8 Ball likes to say:

Actually, I wish the Tivo HD had come in a distant third with, oh, 1% of the vote. The consolation price is pretty good and there would be fewer people competing for the 500 units.

Only the winning item gets the specified deal to *anyone*. Sometimes the 2nd or 3rd gets offered to a few people at not-quite-so-good of a deal, but the idea is that the deal only happens for the winner.

No, the winning item is offered to randomly selected people who voted for it at the low price; the two remaining items are offered to randomly selected people who voted for them but at a slightly higher runner-up price.

I got a Wii on Thursday for $79. ;) Since my kids already have one (I stood in line for 6 hours in 15 degree weather last December to get one), we're selling it to some friends.
Unfortunately, I didn't get what I *really* wanted (a cheap TivoHD). :(

Ditto - and that is exactly what I suspected would happen. I figured at least one person from this forum would have gotten the deal. I am curious what the not-such-a-huge-bargain price was for the TivoHD??????
