View Full Version : Comcast + THX Series 3 - NEVER get Dolby Digital

I have a THX Series 3 connected to Comcast (including, of course, their HD service).

Every show I can find, HD or otherwise, lists only "Stereo" as the available audio. I have yet to be able to find a show that has Digital audio tracks available. And of course, during playback of a recorded show, there is only stereo audio available.

Before I moved I was using DirecTivos, and a fair bit of content had digital audio.

Could this be a config issue on my end? Since even the guide does not show Dolby Digital available, I'm not sure where to start. Could Comcast be that lame?

How is the S3 connected to your receiver? I believe you'll need to connect it either by HDMI or toslink.

Oh, you'll also want to select "Dolby Digital" instead of "Dolby Digital to PCM" on the S3 audio settings.

Actually, I finally did find one show (King Kong in HD on HBOP) that did indeed have Dolby Digital, and confirmed my receiver decoded it and so forth.

So I guess the question become "Why is Comcast so lame that even things like live NFL games and most HD movies even lack Dolby Digital"?

In my case, RCN does digital simulcast and all of my channels are at least DD 2.0. Native HD programs that I watch are usually 5.1, but not always. As best I can remember, all the HD football games I've watched, and the vast majority of movies have been 5.1.

What channels are you watching? Most HD channels do have DD5.1.

Most SD channels do not.

Numb3rs and The Unit are also great ways to check out your DD5.1.

Davepl,

You didn't answer the question about connection to the receiver. Are you passing the sound thru the TV, or direct from TiVo to receiver with toslink or hdmi?

Here in Pittsburgh we have a problem with the local NBC affiliate which is not providing any 5.1 (neither OTA or with Comcast). It has been going on for over a month. I have heard of other NBC affiliates on the east coast with the same problem.

Other than NBC I get full 5.1 with toslink from Tivo to Sony Receiver.

Sound affects on Unit are the best.
