Really hope Matt doesn't get involved with the nurse. Still can't stand her.

The whole plot with Smash just annoys me. His mother is the cliched drama queen and the typical helicopter parent, and the scene with him and Coach at the end was so contrived it wasn't even funny.

but the concept of a guy like Smash thinking of going pro and recruiters trying to woo him is realistic. Oh, loved how he had a Texas Tech banner on his wall. Smash has taste!! :)

And it's confirmed that Lyla IS still in high school. WTF? I mean, do they think we are THAT dumb that we forgot she was a senior last year?

Apparently she got held back.

At least she looks like she could still be in high school. No way Tyra can pull that off anymore.

Journalism adviser guy better learn that he can't close the door with a teenage girl in the same room. Baaaad idea.

Agreed. I totally understand that Julie was oblivious and didn't see anything wrong with it, but he definitely should have realized how inappropriate it was.

Loved how Tyra kicked Riggins to the curb. That was funny.

While the stuff with Smash was cliche, there's a reason it's a cliche. I think that's pretty typical of hot shot high school athletes who think they are invincible and that they're going pro. Even if you explained to them that less than 1/10 of one percent of all college football players make it to the League.

I kind of like the deal with Matt and the nurse. He's finally starting to get a little confidence, and she's pretty hot. The other girlfriend is kind of weird looking.

I guess they totally think we're stupid by putting Lyla back in school. Oh well.

I'm not bothered by the fact that Lisa and Bart never seem to grow older, get out of school.

It's just TV.

Isn't Texas Tech kind of the safety school if you can't get into Blinn or Sam Houston State? Or Amarillo Polytechnica?

Smash's mom is one of my favorite characters.

Which episodes from last year showed Lyla and Tyra to be seniors?

True, but the implication is that far less than 0.1% of all college football players (and remember, "all college football players" includes third-string players for Division III schools where nobody gets scholarships) aren't as good as Smash.

The problem is, what do they do with Smash? Unless Gaius Charles is being written out after this season, or they assume this is going to be the final season (which I doubt), they have to find some way of keeping him in the vicinity. Say, where is that historically black (and I assume fictional) college that, obviously, Smash's mother is going to try and force down his throat located, anyway?

(Meanwhile, here's an idea for the season finale; Dillon makes it to the state final again, and they're ahead by 3 with 10 seconds left but it's fourth down on the other team's 40 or so. Here's the play; pitchout to Landry, who runs the other way into Dillon's own end zone for a safety, burning off the last 10 seconds, and they win by one - but, not knowing any better, when he gets to the end zone, he throws the ball up in the air to celebrate, and one of the other team's players catches it in the air (a fumble or an interception, depending on whether the ball went backward or forward) for the game-winning touchdown. That actually happened in a game a few years ago.)

Could be why he is now working in a small town in Texas, in spite of his credentials.

Am I the only one that feels like they're going to have Smash get seriously injured in a play, injured in such a way that his collegiate and pro football careers are in serious peril?

That's exactly what happened to the Smash-like character in the movie, which is enough to make me think they'll stay away from it.

they already did that with Jason Street. I hope they don't do it twice. Now, if he goes off to college and doesn't go on to have a huge career and win the Heisman and become the #1 pick in the NFL draft, then I'd be OK with that.

I'd pay to see Smash end up a quadriplegic by the end of the season. Karma.

Bonus points if we can get Austin Nichols naked on a toilet again.

I wouldn't be shocked if Smash ends up hurt...although it would be pretty weak to have the key player get hurt 2 seasons in a row.
I also wouldn't be shocked if he accepts a deal at a major college, takes a bribe and gets busted on it, losing his scholarship and being forced to stay local.
Matt...smoooooooth operator.

All mama has to do is bring out the steroid evidence and she can have her way.

She could do that...and completely destroy any further relationship with Smash.
I wouldn't be surprised if the steroids came back into play in some way.
But I would be very disappointed if it was that way.

The part about the Smash story that gets me is that he just ain't that good. And what is up with the steroids story line? When he took his shirt off he was less buff than last year. A short skinny guy ain't gonna be a big recruiting star.

The story to me will be that he doesn't get the offers he thinks he is going to get. The letters schools send only indicate an interest, not an offer.

The other thing though is that the casting of Smash and his mama is perfect. They have a similar jaw line and eyes. She looks like his mama.

And for those of you who think this is over the top stereotypical, follow college recruiting more closely. Lots of coaches make their money on recruiting the parents, especially the parents who are concerned about academics.

There is the story of a recent football recruit whose father announced he would not sign the letter of intent if his son picked a certain school. He even went so far as to publically criticize the coach of that school. It eventually ended with the father signing the LOI because the kid really wanted to go there but it was a Smash-like drama played out in the public for a few months. The kid? Vidal Hazelton. The school? USC. He is a sophomore there now.

Only one brief comment about John From Cincinnati moving to Dillon? He still seems to have that "hit by a brick" look in his eyes.

No, Oklahoma is the safety school for those who can't get into TT.

I knew you guys were going to be upset over the "revelation" that tyra and lyla were still in school. I still don't understand what the big deal is, though. I don't remember them ever indicating that either was a senior last year. I do remember Mrs. Taylor telling tyra to get her grades up and then she'll be able to go to a good school - which means she was a junior at most. Furthermore, lyla said last season that she would later follow jason to whatever college he went to.
