If a give a new HD Tivo as a gift and get a $400 lifetime subscription for it as an existing lifetime customer, are the accounts of the 2 boxes forever joined, sharing one login at Tivo.com?

the lifetime goes with the box not with the account so when you gift the box the lifetime service goes with it.

So it just takes a phone call to Tivo to put the gift Tivo on its own account?

Since the new lifetime deal is actually being sold as a lifetime MSD deal (e.g., only available when a current customer buys an additional box) it's not obvious to me that it's transferable the way the "old" Lifetime boxes were.

It is, as I have already given some gifts to my kids that way without any problem from TiVo for the xfer. This is no loss to TiVo as they are getting their $400. And if you think about it if you bought a TiVo and put Lifetime on it for yourself and 4 years from now you sell it on E-Bay or such, what a mess if that TiVo was tainted by having a non transferable Lifetime Service. Like the upgrades on the Hard Drives that TiVo tells you in their T&C can result in termination of TiVo service, its non enforceable as a practical matter. Each TiVo with a Sub helps TiVo from a finical point of view, lifetime or otherwise.
