View Full Version : TivoHD - using HDMI for audio only, w/o video?

I'm attempting to hook up a TivoHD to an Onkyo SR705 using HDMI, for audio purposes only, there is no HDMI going to my TV. (Only one DVI on my TV used by cable DVR, haven't gotten HDMI/DVI cables yet, trying to preserve the limited optical inputs on the receiver).
The receiver seems to indicate it's getting a PCM signal, but no audio is output (analog output from Tivo is fine). Tivo diagnostic screen says "HDMI not connected". Does the TivoHD just not output audio over HDMI if video handshake has not been established?

If the there is a HDMI handshaking problem, you will get neither video nor audio. I sporadically run into this issue with my Sony TV; it goes away after a second or two, but in the meantime all I get is a picture with an error message that says "HDMI Not Permitted" and a lack of audio.
Before you invest in an HDMI-DVI adapter, make sure your TV is HDCP compliant; if not you'll run into the same issue when you hook up the TV.

I did this for some time with my Series3 and an Onkyo TX-SR674, and it worked just fine. I've sinced moved to HDMI only (I had to wait over 3 months for Toshiba to get around to supplying a replacement HDMI module for my TV - the old one failed to negotiate HDCP with anything), but I never had a problem with it, except (on recent software versions) audio would cut in and out right after I turned on my receiver and TV; I think that's a negotiation problem, as after pressing the Advance button on the remote (or anything else, for that matter) it sorts itself right out.

yea i have an Onkyo TXSR604B and i am able to do it just fine, although i too get that "hdmi connectiojn not permitted" message from the tivo, typically when audio formats are changing in the broadcast or right when i'm switching to that input on my TV.
But basically, if you have the component video hooked up to your TV and the HDMI hooked up to your receiver, the Tivo will be outputting the signal via both outputs, so the receiver shouldn't care that it's video output isn't going anywhere.
