View Full Version : Line Unavailble Error

This is on behalf of my sister. She is a happy TIVO user, and is now beside herself since the program updates stopped working. She has a lifetime subscription, and the service has worked fine for the last two years.
I have tested all the wiring, have switched the devices on and off, and gone through the basic trouble shooting.
When the machine is taken to my brothers house, the updates work fine.
So I am certain the problem has something to do with my sisters phone line.
The line appears to work fine, and the line provider (Virgin Media) state they have made no line changes.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems?
The error being reported is "Line Unavailable".

Does she have call waiting or other services on the phone line that mean the dialtone isn't constant ?
Is it the original tivo phone cable, or another?
A voicemail message from Virgin changed the dialtone and prevented my brother's Tivo from dialing up properly when he set up his Tivo recently.
My guess is that's your problem too.

Sounds about right. Although I have been getting my updates through a 'net connection for some time now, I certainly never had problem with getting them through my cable phone line before I switched to the 'net.

There is a setting where you can tell the Tivo not to detect dial tone and it will then try to dial regardless of whether or not it thinks it can hear one. May be this setting now needs to be altered to overcome the changed dial tone?
Messages&Setup/Recorder&PhoneSetup/PhoneConnection/ChangeDiallingOptions/SetDialToneDetection/Off Also for good measure change "Set Phone Avail. Detection" to Off
Alternatively has your sister just had broadband installed? If so the Tivo now needs to connect to the phone socket via the phone connection of an ADSL filter. Otherwise it will hear broadband data noise on the line and not be able to dial.

You can't get ADSL on a Virgin cable phone line.

Make sure the 'phone cable is in the correct socket on the back of TiVo.
If OK - then unplugged everything from every 'phone socket - then just plug in TiVo and try again.

True, but VM do do ADSL, which is probably where the confusion arose :)

You can actually get a VM phone-line, through BT, as an over-ride provider. Maybe he got confused in his old age ;):p:)
