Gigs vs. Hours

So if I have an 80 hour series 2 unit, does this mean I have an 80 gig drive? I want to install a bigger drive, but I don't what size I have?

Yes, but it's not 1 GB/hour, more like 0.8-0.9 GB/hour. About 20 GB is used for the kernel and tuner buffers. So a 250GB drive will give a S2 about 280 hours.

My 820 GB Directv series II gives 795 hrs for 820 GB drive or .9695 hours per GB that is of course is for large drives 25 GB for the system use and 795 for programs. Hope this helps :)

No, 230/0.8 = 287.

I have a 250 GB drive in a S2DT, and it says I have 278 hours. But it uses two buffers.

The directv is digital only. The S2 series usually quotes hours for analog basic. In the Settings/Recording screen, the hours for basic, medium, high, and best are listed. Medium uses about 1.2 GB/hr, basic is about 0.85 GB/hr.

One way to see the size is to use TTG and transfer a show at each quality setting, then you would get the size. In 9.2a on my HD TiVo, you can get the size of a program from the Now Playing List. Select a show, then press Info, then Channel Down to scroll down to the file size info.
