View Full Version : TiVo refuses to work with AirPort Extreme

OK, I'm baffled.

I have a pair of series 2 TiVos, each with a wireless adaptor (one Belkin, one Linksys). The wireless access point was an old AirPort (plain 802.11b) that worked well for several years. It also served as the access point for three Macs.

I've been trying to upgrade to a faster network, which includes replacing the old AirPort with an 802.11n AirPort Extreme base station. It works fine with the Macs, but the TiVos refuse to connect to the network. When security is enabled, I get the following message:

To use WPA2, you must have a TiVo Wireless G USB Network Adapter.

However, I get this message even when the AirPort security is set to WEP, not WPA. It seems incapable of recognizing WEP in the new base station.

When I turn off security completely, TiVo begins to go through the network setup but gets stuck when trying to acquire a DHCP address. It claims that none can be found.

Should I just go out and buy TiVo-brand wireless adapters? Is there something seriously wrong with my TiVo boxes? Anyone know what's going on?

I replaced my D-Link adapters with the TiVo Wireless G when I went from an 802.11g Airport to the Airport Extreme.

J-man,

Is your router setup to use DHCP? Make sure it is and that its set to allow 802.11b/g/n (you'll need b for your adapters).

If that doesn't work try the following:

1. Keep your router using WEP or None (only the TiVo G thing uses WPA/WPA2)
2. Unplug your TiVo adapters
3. Restart your router
4. Plug back in the adapters (make sure they've been unplugged for maybe 30 secs)
5. Try again.

If that doesn't work, forget DHCP and just use some static IP addresses.

Lets say your computer's IP address is 192.168.1.3

IP for TiVo: 192.168.1.77
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: your router's IP address, very likely 192.168.1.1
DNS: check your router/computer, it comes from your ISP

All that being said, I love my TiVo Wireless G adapters and highly recommend them.

I also use TiVo Wireless G Adapters with my Airport Extreme with no issues.

TiVo told me that they don't support the Airport Extreme and that even the wireless G won't work with the Airport Extreme. I guess they were wrong.

FYI, I am still using an Ariport Extreme for 2 TiVos (TiVo adapters), 2 wireless Dell Laptops, 1 wireless HP desktop, 1 Location free router for PSP and an Emac all seeing the Airport, so here is an example of the flexibility of the Airport.
Maybe you can try the TiVo wireless adapters and return them in the 'return period' if they don't work for you.

Another "me too"...

Two Airport Extremes and three Airport Expresses all in a WDS configuration. I have four TiVo boxes using the TiVo Wireless Adapter and two using an ethernet connection -- each going through an Airport Express in bridge mode. The network is running WPA/WPA2
