Using Series 2 with DTV H20

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am thinking about using an my Series 2 receiver with a Directv H20 and I wanted to see if and how others were doing it.
I plan to run 2 separate outputs, 1 to the Tivo, and another straight to a TV.

I have a couple of concerns.

1. Channel Changing. Will the Tivo be able to switch channels on the H20?

2. If I use the original remote to change channels (the ones the Tivo can't see) will the Tivo be able to pick up where I left off to change channels itself?

3. Can the Tivo "see" the MPEG 2 channels from the H20? I know it can't see the MPEG 4 ones.

thanks for your time.

1:Yes, with IR blaster or Patersontech USB serial adapter.
2: I think so.
3: The TiVo will see whatever channels the H20 box can tune, regardless the video encoding or satellite, as the box outputs standard analog video for the TiVo.

Do you need to be a DirecTv subscriber to use the H20 this way?

It appears from other posts that you can NOT schedule to record from the H20 since TiVo does not know how to change to channel 9-1. Is that true? if so, then why do the H20?

You need to be a DirecTV subscriber to use the H20 at all.
The TiVo will tune DirecTV channels fine, although I understand there are issues with tuning channels which have SD and HD versions with the same number.

Series 2 TiVos cannot tune OTA digital channels on any tuner that use the "9-1" scheme, directly anyways.

I got a PertersonTech USB serial adapter coming for my dad's Tivo with H20. It has software to help with the 9-1 scheme. I'll know better how it works when I setup it over Christmas.
