We have had Tivo for years with no problems until recently. Our Tivo connects through a telephone line and lately we keep getting a failure due to "call interrupted." I don't know what to do. It is so frustrating to know that the unit has no trouble dialing and connecting, but the downloading gets cut off. Any suggestions out there? We're thinking of connecting through the computer, but that doesn't sound trouble free either.

How often is this happening? At what time of the day does it seem to happen the most?

I imagine your TiVo is cycling through a periord when it is calling when your phone is likely to be used the most. It'll probably be more successful as soon as it gets in a cycle of calling during the middle of the night.

I wouldn't worry until it had gone through about 3 or 4 consecutive days of not completing a load. Then, I'd force the call and make sure nobody in the house uses the phone until complete.

It has gone four or more days without success. Our phone line is almost never used, we keep it for emergencies. I know for a fact that almost every time Tivo tried to connect, the phone was not in use. I've forced the connection at least a dozen times and it has failed every time. I just don't know what to do.

Hi Monty,

I can't help you with your current problem, but if you do have a broadband internet connection you might really want to consider connecting your TiVo that way. You do have the added expense of getting a network adapter for the TiVo (either wired or wireless), but you get a lot of extra features and content when you are connected via broadband that should make it worth it.

If you are interested in giving this a try post back and we can help to walk you through the setup.

I too have had numerous problems just recently and I am using a 2nd line which no-one has the number for and even if it is connecting in the middle of the night, the call is still not going through. This seems to be worse after switching my phone service to using Comcast cable. Not sure if that is linked, but this is VERY frustrating.

It would help immensely if you told us how you get phone service. Is it VOIP, DSL, good old POTS, digital phone, or something else? It's really hard to help if we don't know all the facts. If you give us more info, we can help you faster, without having to ask for more info.

There are some codes you can place in the dialing prefix to slow down the modem so it will work. If you have something other than POTS, then you may need to put in some of these codes. Search for 'prefix codes' or 'slowing down the modem'.

If you have a broadband connection, getting a USB to ethernet adapter would make these problems go away. But if you want to still use the modem, it will require some tweaking to the modem settings.

Good luck,

Make sure the phone cable is seated properly. Pull out the plug and push it back in again at both connections. Maybe the plug came out of the jack a bit and it's not making contact with the pins inside.
