View Full Version : Accessing TivoWeb Remotely

I have a networked setup...Series 2 Tivo connected via USB/Ethernet to my PC running XP Professional. My Series 2 harnesses the Internet connection from my PC through Internet Connection Sharing - my PC has a static IP but my Tivo has a DHCP address that I guess is supplied by my computer.

I have tested on my computer accessing tivoweb and it connects right away (as the tivo is connected locally to the network).

My question is how to I access this remotely? I can remote desktop to my PC no problem...but since my TiVo has a DHCP connection through my PC...dunno how to communicate that info in the form of a web address.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

I dont fully understand what you want to do. But from what I get you want to access your Tivo from outside your network? So say your at a buddies house and want to access the tivo?

INTERNET
|
|
PC
|
SWITCH -_-------->Tivo S2
|
----------------->Other Network Device

Is that what your network is setup like?

Like, lets say I'm at work and want to access the TiVoweb feature to download stuff from my TiVo remotely. This is what I'd like to do.

My "network" is set up in a very simplistic manner right now:

Internet (Wireless w/ Port Forwarding Enabled)
|
|
PC (Sharing Internet Enabled)
|
|
TiVo (connected by Ethernet directly to PC)

My PC receives an actual IP address from the Internet connection.
My TiVo (as it doesn't have it's own adapter) receives a DHCP setting
as defined by my PC.

So my PC is easy to connect to remotely (has 69.XXX.XX.XXX address) but
my TiVo has a 168.XX.XX.XX address.

I can while on my local PC use a web browser and successfully connect to TiVoweb by entering the 168.X address with https.

Thanks for your help.

Your computer is basically acting like an additional router.

What type of internet connection/modem do you have? Do you have a seperate wireless router or is it built into your modem?
You say it is "wireless" internet, but is it DSL or Cable, etc...

You should be able to connect your Tivo directly to the modem or router; this would be the easiest way.
Right now your PC is doing network address translation, it is "protecting" your Tivo from the outside world. I dont know if there is a way to do port forwarding ON THE PC to get the proper ports forwarded through your NAT (PC).

Your setup seems overly complicated for what you want to do. You should be able to connect both your PC and the Tivo directly (wirelessly or wired) to your internet connection without your Tivo going "through" your PC.

Please elaborate on the type of connection and the hardware used for the "wireless" access.

That should do what you want. However, I think it'll be useless because home internet connection upload speeds are rather limited: I get 24 KB/s Upload. Would take a million years to d/l a movie to a remote location like that.
