I've been a looooong time D* subscriber, and was getting HD installed from them. That is until the installer came by, tried to put the 5lnb dish up and we discovered it just doesn't fit on my balcony. Damn canopy is too low and blocks the dish. SOOO now i'm contemplating my options. I've checked the thread about Cox cablecard installations and issues people have been having with that. Seems like things have been getting worked out.

But then there's the whole new deal with the HD channels being moved to SDV which would render the TIVOs pointless.

So i wanted to get you all's opinions of COX service, particularly in Fairfax Co (VA) and DC area. and just to be clear, if there's a difference between TIVO HD and the TIVO S3 HD that has the expanded capacity and THX etc.

oh and just to add- the sales guy was giving me this as what it'd cost:

after promo rate is over-
$69.99 for all basic channels with HD (i.e. no HBO or other premiums, but ESPN, Discovery etc)
this would include the cable card rental fees, but of course, no cablebox or dvr service or anything since i'd be getting a Tivo.

Promo rate for D* jumpers:
$47.99 for 10 months for the above package.

good deal?

I'm moving to Cox (in Hampton Roads) from D* as well in the next month or so. How did you find out about the Promo rate for D* jumpers?

i just told the sales rep that I have Directv but can't get HD with them, so i'm looking at my options for what to do now, then asked what deals they had. No haggling or specific requests or anything. he just offered it up.

Fairfax Cox is SDV, so forget about HDTV. I think they are leaving all the existing channels, but all of the new HD channels will be SDV. Service is good if you get the right person on the phone, but that is a crapshoot. There are people who know what is going on and talk to you like a human, and then there are the no nothings that just read from a script. Any question from you gets redirected back to a script question. Just call back and hope you get a better rep.

if they keep the existing channels, or really just the local, ESPN and Discovery, then i'll be all right until Tivo finalizes their tuning selector or whatever it's called. Right now, a vaaaast majority of stuff i watch is local programming, so i can't imagine that they'll put that on a switched service.

I believe that they are keeping all local programming off of SDV, so you should be fine. I just bought a Tivo HD and am in the same boat as you. I've decided I probably can live without the new channels, though I would like to see Animal Planet et. al. Oh well, I don't see them in HD now, so I guess I can live with not seeing them when they become available.
