View Full Version : Weird message when I schedule a recording

WHY?
Everything is going great since I upgraded to the Series 3 THX, cablecards are in, no pixelation and the system has not rebooted once
I have three HD recordings in the now playing list, one scheduled to record tonight (Saturday) and two scheduled to record on Sunday night with one more scheduled on Moday.
Total HD movies in Now playing list as of Monday will be 6 as of tomorrow night and less as I will watch and delete some between now and then.
The night in question, Tuesday Nov 6 I have 5 shows scheduled to record and I just now went to schedule two more shows and when I started to schedule the first one I got a conflict message saying some shows will be deleted, reason: Not enough disk space?
I have the option to go ahead and schedule the recording I want which is at 7 PM but it says it will not record the show scheduled at 9 PM the following wednesday Nov 14 due to not enough disk space and I would only have a total of 11 HD shows
UPDATE! Also noticing programs in the view recording history in the to do list saying won't record due to low disk space now or there will not be enough disk space when it is scheduled to record (Based on current projections).
WHY?).Are your recordings "Save until I delete"?

Are your recordings "Save until I delete"?
Yes, that make a difference. Even though I delete it when I watch it and it goes into the recently deleted folder.
I probably never have more then 10 1 hour shows to watch at a time and nothing records on Friday or saturday and nothing till 9 PM on sunday so those nights I free up the whole drive

Note KUID (Keep Until I Delete) shows that are only scheduled, not yet recorded, have space reserved for them and can cause deletions. KUID should be used rarely, if ever, for recordings in the future, because the TiVo treats it as absolutely the highest priority and goes through all kinds of contortions to make sure the KUID shows are recorded. That causes problems for people who use it casually!

OK, so if I change the season pass to lets say "save for 7 days" that should take care of the issue?
Alos, after last nights shows that recorded and I also watched two shows and deleted them I noticed that the show that was put into the "will not record because:" that was scheduled to record next thursday was now took out and put back into the "to do list" and scheduled to record as normal.

You may still have problems with warning messages if you have too many shows scheduled to be kept 7 days from now (it won't assume you'll delete any of them ahead of time), but the TiVo won't start taking any other actions like actually deleting shows.
Note that shows eligible to be deleted after 2 (or whatever) days will not be deleted until the TiVo actually runs out of room. I've had shows set for save for 2 days that I've kept for 4 years. The only time the I lost shows unexpectedly was when I made a wishlist for "Olympics" without realizing just how many channels were showing the latest summer Olympics!

Still, the yellow icons next to programs are annoying.

Always set Season Passes and single recordings to 'Keep Until Space Needed'. Once a day, change the programs that you still have to watch to 'Keep Until I Delete'. If there is no yellow dot, you still have at least 24 hours for that program.
By following this method, all the programs in my Now Playing list have green dots (no accidental deletions) and I get a full To Do list showing everything recording in the next 12 days. Tivo assumes it will be able to delete tonight's programs to make space for something tomorrow or later if it needs to. Occasionally I get messages saying that by changing to 'KUID' something recording in the next day or two will be deleted earlier. This is based on not deleting any of my current "green dot" programs in that time. I can also more easily get my Tivocasts and Unbox downloads by setting my future recordings this way.

Most people do not get messages, most people do not have any problems getting TiVocast and Unbox downloads, and most people do not go through their Now Playing list once a day changing things.
Add up the disk space for the shows you have recorded; are you really getting close to full capacity of the TiVo? Unless TiVo has changed its algorithms (always possible, I'd be interested to see your numbers), you're getting substantially less capacity for stored shows by using KUID Season Passes.
I've seen a good number of people over the years who use KUID Season Passes. But until now, they've all been people complaining about weird things happening when they get close to capacity on their TiVo. I think you're the first I've seen actually recommending KUID SPs in seven years!

I'd recommend increasing the hdd or adding another TiVo if space is an issue. I can honestly say, in over 5 years, I have never had a program get deleted that I did not expect to be deleted and I have NEVER seen a message warning me about programs being deleted, AND I rarely if ever use KUID. The only time is if I had a movie I wanted to save. But, I never have to jump through any of those hoops. I could care less what color the dots are. Currently I have two S3's with 500g drives and it seems to work out just fine for me. I record more than I can watch.

"Keep until you delete" should not be used -- IMO -- unless you have expanded the storage on your Tivo with an upgraded hard drive or eSATA drive.
Using "Keep until delete" gets more of your recorded programs deleted faster.

That seems like a lot of work.

It all depends on how you regularly use your Tivo. All of my SP's and single recordings are pre-scheduled for 'Keep Until Space Needed'. I do have a lot of Auto-Record Wish Lists in addition to regular programs. The regulars are ones we want to watch and not have accidentally deleted to record a Wish List program. These are manually changed to 'Keep Until I Delete' if not watched right away. The 'ARWL's are interests only that may or may not be watched (more of a fine-tuned Tivo Suggestions). While the 'ARWL's are at the bottom of the SP list this only handles recording priority not delete to free up space preference. If there was a way to prioritize delete to free up space order, like setting the 'ARWL's to "Treat Like A Tivo Suggestion" or having a multi-level Keep Priority, that would work fine. Until my Tivo can figure out the true 'KUID's on its own, manually changing them is the way to go.
