View Full Version : 9.2J has overscan bug?

Ever since the 9.2J update, many (all? most?) SD recordings display part of the overscan area (a black and white digital dot frenzy at the top of the screen.)
It shows up with video output set to 1080i fixed, but doesn't show up if I set it to native.
I don't like how things look in native mode, though - lots of blank screen and flashing every time I go from guide or menu to a recording or live. (Also, the Tivo seems to do a more attractive job upscaling 480i to 1080i than my Sharp 52DX9U does upscaling 480i to 1080p).
Anyone else seen this?

TiVo is doing what it is supposed to. Those crawling dots are in the signal and you have configured your Sharp to display all of the picture. Change the view mode on your Sharp from Dot By Dot to Stretch or SStretch to get rid of the problem.

Dot by Dot won't fix it. Just change the display resolution.

Yeah, I see the same thing when my Samsung display is set to "Just Scan" mode. In normal 16:9 mode it's fine. My Dad has a Pioneer plasma that also does this in dot-by-dot mode (or whatever it's called on a Pioneer display).

Just set it to hybrid mode. It shows 480i as 480p, it looks a little prettier and it doesn't show the overscan.

I don't buy it.
NTSC line 21 contains CC/XDS data. There is never visible raster on line 21, its part of the VBI. (Further, I believe there are 6 visible lines dropped in the conversion to a digital 480i signal - they could start a line late and still be ok.)
When the TiVo upscales 480i to 1080i, there's no reason why it should be including line 21 in the upscaled raster other than programmer error, IMHO. I think they have an off-by-one error somewhere.
The fact that my TiVo didn't display this behavior until the latest software update only reinforces my opinion.

Would it kill you to just change the display mode?

A workaround is not the same thing as a fix.
There are down sides to changing the output format - hybrid mode looks pretty good, but there's a great deal of display thrashing and delay while everything tries to sync up again when you go between the guide and a SD channel.
Products (even good products) have bugs. Just because you love product X doesn't mean that you shouldn't discuss the bugs in product X.

It's true that the closed caption line is supposed to be invisible, but it's also true that in many cases (specific programs or channels), data does spill over into the visible area (if you have no overscan). Why this is, I'm not sure, but I've seen it for years.

It's not a bug though. When a HD channel shows a SD commercial/advertisement, you'll see the overscan line regardless of your view mode.
It just comes with the territory of an investment in HD.

I have a 1080p Sharp TV and it has always had the same problem. You'll only see it when viewing with Dot-by-dot mode. Switching to another view mode will definitely fix it.
