In the system information on my TivoHD it says that it is a series3. Is this true?
I called TiVo customer service on a different issue and mentioned this. She said that the TivoHD should say it is a series 2.

The TivoHD and Series3 are two different models. Both are listed as Series3 on the System Information screen, because both have the same core features.

In the system information on my TivoHD it says that it is a series3. Is this true?Yes. Also, the Series 3 is a Tivo HD (as it says prominently on the box, much moreso than the "Series 3" designation).
Tivo themselves have blessed the labels "Series 3" and "Tivo HD" to distinguish the two models, but it's somewhat arbitrary, since each model is really both of those things.
Which is not to say they're the same -- there are substantial hardware differences. But the functionality is nearly the same.
Bad nomenclature decisions by Tivo here.

On the Tivo Support page it lists both the Series 3 and the TivoHD as "Series 3 DVR's" ...

In the forums... the convention is pretty widespread that the Sept 2006 $799 Tivo is called the S3 and the July 2007 $299 Tivo is called the THD. YMMV. When someone says 'Series 3 Tivo HD' you have no idea what unit they are talking about.

I think it's pretty plain that, when you add TiVo HD to the conversation, you're talking about the cheaper unit.

The TiVoHD vs. the S3 is like a celeron compared to a Core2 Duo... Or a Chevy vs. a Cadillac....

The TivoHD and Series3 are two different models.I can't even begin to imagine how otherwise-smart people spent hours/days/weeks/months conjuring naming conventions for their products and came up with these two incredibly crappy designations. Sheesh.
Someone in Marketing should be dragged-out & shot for this! ;)

Apparently its all whatever you want it to be!
So far all the hi def TiVoes are considered Series 3s.
However the Series 3 model and the TiVo HD model are two different platforms - if you consider platform to mean the hardware design.
When using the Series 3 or TiVo HD labels, I think it best they be used for the models. I prefer to say hi def TiVoes or cableCARD based TiVoes for both. You might also refer to the Series 3 platforms.
Calling a Series 3 (model) a TiVo HD doesn't sound correct since the S3 came out long before the name TiVo HD came into being.
