View Full Version : Cable card problem after 9.2 upgrade?

Hi,
I seem to be having problems with my Time Warner (New York City) SA cable cards (2 S cards). Sometime last week or over the weekend, I stopped receiving some of my pay channels. This includes Showtime and HBO as well as some of the middle channels like Comedy Central. I suspect these are the scrambled channels. Strikingly, many of my HD channels (at least those from broadcast networks) are OK-I thought those were scrambled as well, but maybe not.

In any case, the timing correlates with my upgrade to 9.2. I don't know if this is the cause. However, I would like to get my connection back without waiting for TW to come for a visit.
I have looked at the cable card diagnostic screens, but from what little I can tell, everything is OK (there were a lot of numbers that meant nothing to me, I confess). I have tried restarting the TivoHD, but that did nothing. I called TW and they tried to fix it from their end-there was no change.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dan

TiVo has a large article on CableCARD troubleshooting:

It might help you figure out if you have an activation problem, a pairing problem, etc.

Thanks.
I will check this out when I get home tonight.
I am a bit unclear on the difference between encrypted and protected channels. I assume that channels like HBO etc are protected-a higher level of security then basic encryption?

In any case, this looks like it will help. My cards were clearly paired before and I am able to receive basic channels. I will look to see if it is a pairing problem or a decoding problem.

Anyone have any ideas what might have caused my cards to be knocked out of whack?
Thanks,
Dan

It all depends on your cable provider... Some providers (like mine) don't copy-protect any channels, so pairing is unnecessary. However, many of my channels are still encrypted, so if the CableCARDs aren't activated properly, they won't be able to decrypt these channels.
