Hank gets the girl! I have to say that I did not expect that to happen, or at least I had given up hope of that happening by the time it did.
So next season he has a choice to keep the relationship and lose the book or get the book back and in the process destroy the relationship?
I am so glad this is getting a second season...I liked it the first few eps, but thought they were trying to hard. The second half of the season was great once all the characters were established.

When she jumped in the car, I thought it was just a bizarre, tacked-on ending to give the series closure. Then, they announce the second season, which goes to show how much I know! Weird choice...
But I do like the show, and I assume they know what they're doing. And it looks like we won't have to wait long ("Soon," not "2008" like with The Tudors)...

I hope that soon isn't too long, but heck, 2008 is relatively soon now (within just a few months left in the current year).
The point about the jumping in the car is dead on. It did feel weird, like they trying to wrap the series up at that point, which has me wondering where the heck they'll go next season.
I don't see him getting the book back at all. He may get his career going again with a lot of people comparing the new book to his work, but that's about the best I expect to see.

The return date is "summer 2008." Given the push, my guess is that they've slotted it to start after the end of the new "L Word" season.
Regarding the plotline, I thought it was kind of an homage to "The Graduate." To me, what happened indicated that she didn't want to be married to Bill, not necessarily that she wants Hank.

great finale.
but she is married to Bill now isn't she? obviously they can work that plot point next season somewhat, but it will be interesting to see where they take this given that Hank "grew up" quite a bit this season already.

Depends. Did we see her sign the marriage license?

Yeah, the whole thing seemed headed towards a nod to The Graduate, but it still leaves me wondering where things go next year. The show was about Hank's flawed relationship with his ex and with every other female around him. If he's matured and now seems like he'll be back with the ex, what will the show be about?

His dream was certainly a nod to the Graduate...and I was definitely expecting something like that, but once she actually went through with the ceremony then I stopped expecting it which made the ending so great.
While Hank has evolved, he still has room for improvement and I can see plenty of possibilities for next season. I think the whole book vs. truth about Lolita thing will still be a major factor next season. They may keep it a secret for a while, or have the truth come out right away. As soon as he gets the girl back, he loses her again when the truth comes out.

I thought the ending was excellent! Definitely a lot of misdirection in this episode. First you think she won't marry Bill, then Hank decided to move on and she goes through with it. Then "tada" she realizes she made a mistake. I wasn't sure if the show was picked up for a 2nd season, so when Karen jumped in the car, I said to my husband "Maybe this is the end of the show?" Thankfully, Showtime immediately told us there would be another season.
But I agree, there's not a lot of places for the plot to go from here, other than the cat coming out of the bag about Hank and Mia and what happens with the book.
Either way, great season finale IMHO!

I thought the series dragged in the middle of the season but this was a great season (or even series) finale! Worth the time spent this season.

Really enjoyed this series. I thought it started good, but not great. But quickly got better. And by the end, it's become one of my favorites. One of the few shows I try to watch the same night.
I'm not worried about the plot/story for next year. That's the writer's job; they'll find something to entertain us.
The only part of this show I'm not thrilled with is the daughter's band. No girl that age sings or composes like that. It takes me out of the moment every time I see her sing. But that's about my only nit. I love the rest of the characters, especially Charlie & Marcie.

This show grew on me so much. It was incredible the last few episodes. I am in the boat thinking they may have hurt themselves with that ending, but we'll have to wait and see.

I liked this show better and better with every episode. Can't wait to see where they go with it next season.

Not sure I'm understanding this nit. That is her singing, and as far as I recall none of the songs we heard her band perform were new compositions -- they were all covers.

"Don't Let Us Get Sick" was a Warren Zevon song that she sang in the middle of the season. I recognized some of the other songs, but Zevon is one of my favorites so that one stuck in my head. There was another nice Zevon cover of "Reconsider Me" in this last episode.

I hope that Bill and Mia are excised quickly next season. Whether the cat comes out of the bag or not, I don't need to hear Mia say f@#k again. I have never heard one curse word repeated so often and yet sound so forced. It's as if the writers had no other way to let us know she was a rebellious girl except by her course language.
If the cat does come out of the bag, and Bill decides to have Hank charged for statutory rape, he probably would not be able to publish the book. California has a law that states (and I am paraphrasing here) that a criminal cannot profit financially from their crimes. They have taken money from criminals that they were paid for rights to their stories and used it as restitution for their victims.
Besides the point that Bill made about being able to quash any book project he wanted. He could try to ruin Hank...more than Hank has already ruined himself.

Sad to see the season end here. :/
Is it just me or did the end feel like "The End" like a series finale? I kinda freaked and got worried maybe it got canned.
And the daughter singing - I like the kid as the character but man her voice is annoying when she is singing. And not exactly "front man" material if you ask me. How she got there I dunno.
And I SOOO want the naughty daughter to get some kind of comeupance, pleeeease.

I, for one, enjoyed the irony of the freshly-minted menstruatrix singing 'Only Women Bleed.'

I did love the fight for the tampons. I kept waiting for Hank to say it's for his daughter and he just didn't. Wouldn't most guys say who it's for? I guess that is why we love Hank because he is so not most guys. :)

Wouldn't most women assume that the guy who's standing beside a young girl trying to buy tampons is probably there to buy them for the girl (who is probably his daughter)?
That scene didn't make any sense to me, after he said he was buying them for his daughter, everyone was happy. What did the woman think he was going to do with them?

I thought it was a terrible ending, so hokey. The little girl really irritates me, especially her sucky singing.

Someone agrees with me! And its HB :)
I knew I wasn't alone in thinking her singing was sucky.

dont you need to consummate the marriage for it to be legal?
Did they know this was renewed at the time they wrote this ending? I took it as they didnt know and put it there so it was open both ways.
why can't hank afford a car wash?
does anyone really 'not' think they had sex? The girl recanting just wasn't believable.

her singing is awful...her acting is worse...
the wedding song was "Only Women Bleed" by Alice Cooper...you'll find it on "Welcome to my Nightmare"...great album...he comes back to the tune later with "The Awakening", where he wakes up and discovers that he murdered his wife...
very appropriate wedding song :p
put me down for stupid ending...the second season will start with them back apart after discovering that he DID sleep with Mia...that would be my guess...

I'm thinking the ending had that 'tacked on' feeling because it turns out to be another dream sequence with Hank passed out in the bushes at the reception.
Did anyone else get a 'Kill Bill' vibe from the fakey green screen look of them driving off?

nope, didn't see it that way at all. in fact, was Hank even drinking that much at the wedding?
the comment to the daughter when he caught her making out w/the boy seemed to fit as did the end. if it turns out to be a dream sequence, that seems like a fairly weak way to write that season finale.

I only posit 'dream sequence ending' for the ep since it began with a dream.
(Although several of the regular episodes did as well)
