Has anyone come up with a way to slap an extra fan inside the case of an S3 or a way to cool down the device externally?

You could try something like this (http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=PA248U). It's made for a notebook pc but should work with a dvr, and its usb powered.
