Two weeks ago, my tivo series 2 began attempting to install the fall upgrade. It never finished... it went into a cycle of rebooting, saying it was nearly finished, then rebooting again  .

I asked a good friend, who had upgraded my tivo to 2 of those maxtor 160gb 7200 rpm ultra drives initially, if he would mind running a disk scan on the drives. This happened a couple of years ago, and when he did that, it found a few bad sectors, blocked them out, and tivo was back running.

Well, when the scan started this time, it got to about 10% of the first drive and started running to problems. Last I heard, the scan had taken over 24 hrs and was still at around 10%.

Doesn't sound good for Tivo :(

So, now I'm faced with what to do next. Right now, I'm assuming that I am going to have to replace both drives - can't tell if either are working right.

So, assuming that is the best way to go, some questions:

1. what's a comperable drive to look for today? I mean, when I look through a lot of online stores I'm seeing loads of SATA drives - those aren't going to work for me.

2. I was wondering if there are other things that should be considered at this time as well - should more memory be added to the system? I just want to get TiVo back and working at least as good as it was before, but would prefer not to go through this again any time soon...
;)

3. I've seen references at times to companies who would do all the clean up, replace drives with software already installed, even I think attempts at copying the old info if possible. I really hate losing the couple hundred plus hrs of shows I hadn't gotten a chance to view - anyone tried those types of sites with success?

Any other words of warning or encouragement?

Finally, a wishlist item - why oh why can't I find a tivo remote that
comes when I call... that doggone remote wanders off and hides from me at least once a week... :p

No to more memory for the series 2. It is not possible. For series one there is the Cache card which may work for your unit at www.9tee.com. You can go to their website and check it out.

As to the software you can go back a version but loose your programs with Instantcake from www.DVRupgrade.com. Remember to leave the phone unplugged after the initial call and you should not get the upgrade. Hope this helps you make the decision. Good Luck :)

IMO, go for any single PATA drive 300GB and up. 320GB if you want to save recordings.

If the old software version still works, you can transfer the files to the new drive in your PC, backup the system (which, IIRC, will keep SPs, WLs, and Thumbs), format the old drives for PC, copy the files from the new drive to the old ones,, then install the image onto the new one, then TTCB them back to the new drive.

One of the upgrade packages allows you to ,in one go, copy from both drives to one drive. I am not sure which one though.
