Does manual recording still work on a Series 1 after service has been canceled?

Assuming it does, do I need to take any pre-cancellation and/or post-cancellation steps? For example, should I unplug the phone line before canceling service so it doesn't even have a chance to call in and figure out service has been canceled? Or is it better for it to try to call in and learn that service has been canceled?

Last year I transferred the Lifetime service from my Series 1 to a Series 3. At the time I was given 1 year free service on the Series 1, but now that's over and Tivo automatically switched me to a monthly service.

I'm not sure it's worth the monthly service, I only use it for a few shows now and assuming manually recording still works, that will probably be fine.

When I spoke to the billing rep he said he didn't think manual recording would work, but wasn't sure. Does it depend on how old the box is?

The box is a Philips PTV300 with an upgraded 120G drive and using software version 3.0-01-1-000. It was originally activated with Lifetime service, so it's never been on a monthly service plan.
