I have a S3 connected to a Sony KDL 46XBR2 via HDMI which works fine with the TV speakers on.

With the speakers off, I connect the optical output of the TV to the optical input of my receiver. No sound.

Connecting The S3 optical output to the receiver optical input directly works OK.

SONY support says TV optical output will not work with HDMI input and suggests that I use red & white audio cabling only.

Is SONY correct? Any suggestions?

Rather odd statement by Sony, I have HDMI run into my Panasonic TV and optical run out to my receiver. It may be a specific Sony issue, stranger things have happened... like 1080p through component on an XBOX 360.

Does your receiver have HDMI, if not, just run HDMI to the TV and optical into the receiver from the S3.

I believe my TV is the same, optical only works with OTA digital broadcasts and cable card. I have a JVC.

I think there is an assumption you would connect your cable box, dvd player, xbox, etc.. optical cable or coax directly to receiver.
