Anyone else catch this? Seems the Scifi channel is doing their own version of the Wizard of OZ. Looks like it could be interesting but it has Alan Cummings in it so I don't know.

Tin Man, referring to the fact that he's a law enforcement officer, and the Tin referred to is his badge.
no.. for the life me I have no idea where I read that, but it was on one of the pages describing the series.

I wish I knew who Zooey was....
Then maybe I'd have a reason to watch it.
I guess it beats the heck out of wrestling, though.

So you're saying that, despite my intense hatred of Sarah Jessica Parker and generic, bland, constructed-by-committee romantic comedies, this one's worth watching merely for Zooey?

There was more then 1 book about OZ right

There were MANY Oz books.
This one is based on the first one, tho', but as with all things that have been "Hammered", it's a "re-imagining", as the thread title says.
Expect a lot of nods to the original, but a lot of seemingly senseless deviations from tradition too.
I personally feel this is an example of people with no imaginations nonetheless making themselves seem like beacons of light in the entertainment industry. Take something someone else did, then change it in bizarre ways, and present it anew.
Personally, I'm waiting for SciFiChannel to do a re-imagining of "My Favorite Martian", where "Martin" is not really stranded, but is a spy sent in preparation for an invasion. Then of course they'll throw us a curve or two. Maybe he was sent to be a spy, but is actually sending them bad info because he wants to stop the invasion....or is that only something he lets Tim discover, so's to believe Martin really is one of the good guys?
And is Tim so innocent in all this, or did the government possibly know somehow about the invasion, and arranged for Tim (an agent, his reporter job being just a cover) to be there when Martin's ship crashes, so's to take him in and monitor him?
Then of course Mrs. Brown will turn out to be a Venusian with her own agenda, while Detective Brennan is actually Tim's boss at the "agency".
There will be at least three murders before the first five episodes have aired, and little hints will be dropped that Martin doesn't really look human, and has been eating the neighbors' cats at night.
Give Bonnie Hammer time.
She'll do this.
I really believe it.
Either that or The Munsters will return, as a drama about the horrors going on behind closed doors at 1313 Mockingbird Lane, the family being the true fiends people have always thought they were.
A neighborhood watch member will learn the truth, and get hooked up with a band of teenagers affiliated with the Illuminati, the lot of them intent on exposing the Munsters and destroying them.
David Bowie plays Herman.

This is what's known as the BSG-ing of television.
Take charming old (or goofy) series. Turn them into seriously dark dramas. Develop a cult following.
Unfortunately, it hasn't worked yet with any series but BSG. :p

I recently saw Wicked. I will never watch The Wizard of Oz the same way again. I liked the show but it kinda ruined the movie. They filled in all kinds of holes and what you were seeing in The Wizard of Oz wasn't really what was going on.

There was more then 1 book about OZ rightThere were some 40 Oz books, 14 books by the original author, L. Frank Baum, another 19 by Ruth Plumly Thompson, and another 7 by various authors.
As all the earlier works are out of copyright, you can find the full text of some of them online. For instance look here for all of L. Frank Baum's: LINK (http://www.literature.org/authors/baum-l-frank/)

Take something someone else did, then change it in bizarre ways, and present it anew. That's exactly what happened with the original movie. The world it portrays is *very* different from the books. Although I'd say both the original movie and this miniseries show *real* imagination, not "no" imagination, not that I agree or disagree with either re-imagining.
"Return to Oz" from 1985 or so is much closer to the spirit of the books and the world they portrayed than the original movie was.

Sci-Fi usually has one or two 'big' budget movies per year. This will probably be about as good as The Lost Room. At least we can hope. As soon as it comes into the 10 day time frame, I'll add this to Now Playing.

The original "Wizard of Oz" movie is a classic and excellent re-imagining of the Baum books.
The movie "The Wiz" with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson was not.
The books themselves are seriously whacked out.

Oh.. VERY...
But I can say that I really enjoyed the Musical and the way it filled in a lot of the blanks from the movie.
And I enjoyed the book, but taken as a completely separate entity from the musical, I view Wicked the Book, as much the flip side of the L. F. Baum books, verses Wicked the Musical as being the offshoot of the movie.
I'm also *very* glad I saw and loved the musical before reading the book, I think the other order would have really frustrated me, as it is I can think back about the musical and say "I know where they got that gem from.." from reading the book.

I am amazed someone does not do the OZ books as a kid's program, especially with the copyright nonsense gone, maybe the books are not that good, but look how bad most kids shows are. Hard to believe all 40 don't have one or two good plots. You'd have parents tuning in their kids just because it had the OZ name on it, someone ought think of that.

OK, fleegle, I don't know the plot of those books either. You are right probably no kids today read them, exactly why they might be interested in that as new material for a kid's show or kid movie, they are not tired of what they never have read. I know growing up I saw the movie and had no idea there were more books. Just one line at the end of the movie saying--Kids, there are more of the Oz books, visit your local library!-- might have made them into a Harry Potter like thing too back then.
