Has anyone tried adding a 2nd internal hard drive via the eSata port?

That is, connecting directly to the main board in place of the eSata connector and mounting the HD inside the Tivo.

Seems that would be a neater way to do it, IF it doesn't get too hot.

Yes, someone started a thread recently about making a bracket. Last couple days I think.

I don't think heats a problem, we've been running dual hard drives in TiVo's since the Series1's.

It's going to be about a bracket and splitting the power.

Here's a link to one thread discussing adding a second internal SATA HDD to a TiVo HD.

IIRC there may be another thread and I know someone has actually done that. They said that heat wasn't an issue...but there is now a concern that the newer THD's power supply is under powered and may have trouble handling dual drives.

Happy hunting!

So what is the point to all of this headache..? Just hook up an external drive..?

An external drive looks ugly in a cabinet. I think people would prefer everything to be sleek and symmetrical.

I would upgrade my internal drive if I hadn't gone for the three-year contract on my THD. The parts portion of the warranty gets extended for the length of the contract, and I have no interest in voiding that by opening it up.

A second internal drive could get you into power problems. Another drive is another 10 watts. Heat could also be an issue. Why not just upgrade the internal drive and avoid any problems with power or heat.

I have a dual (2x1) Hitachi TB (292 HD hour) setup in my THD. A 15 pin power Y cable is all you need to make it work.
