I am considering adding one of these to our bedroom to replace our noisy old S2.
I know S3 is THX certified and HDT is not. Does this mean the HDT will necessarily be louder? Does anyone have any anecdotal experience with the difference?
I would just go ahead with the S3, but don't really want to put in 2 more S-Cards if I don't have to.

Since it uses digital audio outputs, doesn't the receiver/TV decide how loud it is?
Unless you mean how much noise the machine makes?

The THX certification on the Tivo Series3 is different from the THX certification on some A/V receivers. It does not have anything to do with DVR noise.

Yes, I am far noisier than my S3, and my S3 has a noisier than stock drive. ;)

They sound the same to me, and have the almost the same moving parts inside (1 fan, 1 hard drive).
I'd be surprised if TiVo used the exact same model drive in every TiVo (of the same size) so it's possible that some are louder than others.
