View Full Version : Yet ANOTHER 9.1 BUG!!!

Geeze! I'm sick of 9.1. I think I have another problem that I've not seen reported. I HAVE NOT CHANGED ANYTHING (READ THIS TWICE) and I already know 9.1 is a DOG!
If I'm watching a recorded program (probably live too) and pause the playback, when I resume playback, there is a loud burst of audio probably no longer than a few hundred milliseconds before normal audio resumes.
Is anyone else experiencing this?

It could be psychological. The sound shuts off during pause so your ears become used to the silence. When you turn it back on your ears are still not ready for it so they interpret it as too loud. Sort of like someone turning a light on in a really dark room.

I'm sorry. Are you saying you have the problem or not? I did not ask for an analysis of my audio listening skills. It is there. It is obvious and it is annoying.

I get that on all HD channels

You've only made a subjective observation; you'd have to get a dB meter to make a definitive statement about whether or not it is actually there.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness
"It appears that the human auditory system integrates intensity over a 600-1000 ms window. For example, a sound of constant intensity will be perceived to grow in loudness as 20, 50, 100, 200 ms samples are played up to a maximum of ~1000 ms where the perception of loudness will stabilize."

I haven't experienced it. Why not put yourself on the 9.2 Priority List? I just got it last night and it works great.

Wow! I don't need a SPL meter for your information. Here is my definitive statement. It is EXTREMELY loud.
Once again, I did not ask you to solve a problem. Now please go away and try to be as helpful somewhere else as you have here.

Audio problems are going on bigtime on 9.1/9.2
And the answer I got is SEND THE UNIT BACK AND PAY UP!

Not me. What are the details of your system (meaning direct to TV, using a receiver, etc)? Maybe you have something that causes it, that others don't.

It's optical to my receiver. I did not have this problem prior to 9.1 and nothing has changed in my setup. It's happens right when you resume playback, almost like a POP, but it is definitely in the audio specturm as it has some toneality to it. (And no I didn't put a spectrum analyzer on it to verify that either.) I'm wondering if it is something to do with the digital stream being wacked out or something.

I am having that exact SAME issue. But worse, it will not play the sound after all all. It's just dead, obviously a signal issue.
Something broke on the optical thing, and I'll be damned if I'm going to send the box back to tivo for $40 + shipping + $799 deposit. That's what I was just quoted from Tivo, since 9.2 was supposed to FIX IT.
BS!

This could be an issue that is a result of the combination of your receiver and the TiVo so that could explain why not many people have noticed it. I don't know the specifics about how data is transmitted over optical, but it could be that if you pause it at the wrong point, then when you resume the next few bits that are being sent are not being interpreted correctly by the receiver and it results in a rather odd noise. After enough data is sent the receiver resynchs the audio and all is well. That's just a guess on my part.
Try analog audio and see what that does for you. Not that that will be a solution for you, but it'll tell you whether or not the TiVo is actually sending the loud noise.

It's working fine over HDMI to the TV. I assume it works on analog, but haven't checked.
There's a definite bug with the new 9.1/2 software that is causing problems with some optical receivers.

Could you run the optical from the TV to the receiver instead of getting it from the TiVo?

Can you provide some specific details to your audio hookup?
HDMI audio to receiver
HDMI audio to TV
HDMI -> TV -> TV audio out to Receiver (optical, coax, RCA)
Optical to receiver
Optical to TV
RCA to receiver
RCA to TV
...
Make model of the item(s) the audio is going through.

PS: Never experienced any loud audio and I'm constantly watching recorded programs and doing the following: play/pause/play, play/ffwd/play, play/ffwd/play/jumpback. Good example was MNF last night.
My hookup is Optical audio to receiver w/ HDMI video to TV. Receiver is Denon AVR3300

Not sure how you get that Lack of Audio is equivalent to a short loud burst of audio then normal audio after.
That said, it may help if you indicate the equipment you're using.
Also, have you plugged other optical audio inputs in to the port w/ the same audio selection on your receiver to verify that the issue is not with the receiver?
If your receiver has the ability to autodetect you may want to give that a quick try as well.

Well trust me. I've trust multiple other sources to my Onkyo TX 777 over optical with different cords. Other sources work fine over the same connections. The Tivo works except during specific times when I play back a PCM-only show. There is something not clicking on since the upgrade. I have to chance the video input, then back again, and it'll work.
This only happened with 9.1 and now 9.2. So brand new issue after the upgrade.
Basically this update will force me to hurry up and get an hdmi receiver now. Sucks, but I don't want to pay Tivo to replace my unit for no reason.

I did a little investigation and what seems to be happening is when I pause for, say, 3 or more seconds, my receiver switches from ProLogic Movie to DolbyDigital. When I unpause, the burst of audio is, I guess, generated by trying to decode a stream that is not DolbyDigital, but ProLogic and the receiver switches back to ProLogic after a few hundered mS. This doesn't seem to happen on every recording, but I don't have details. I do know I could do this everytime while watching the Dirty Jobs 150th show episode. If I paused and unpaused before my receiver switched to DD, the burst of audio was not heard.
Now, since I don't recall this happening before and I'm fairly certain nothing has changed with my receiver, it seems the optical out of the Tivo is reverting to DD when paused for several seconds. If the recording is not DD, this will cause my receiver to have this behavior.
It is a S3->optical->Pioneer VSX84TXSi. No HDMI, no analog, just optical.

9.1 and 9.2 messed up the previously flawless toslink connection between my S3 and my reciever too. I hope tivo is aware of this and working on fixing it -- VERY annoying.
