View Full Version : Flickering/Jumping (missing frames?) during live sports

We have a new HD Tivo with two Cablecards and Comcast service.

I've noticed that live football (american-football) on both NBC (Sunday nights) and ESPN (Monday nights) sometimes appears to be being displayed at the wrong frame rate. The symptom is that any rapid movement looks like we're seeing double frames of some images. The image jumps (it's more a jump than a flicker).

It can be nausea inducing at times, and we sometimes switch back to the standard definition picture. It's not constant, it's not all the time, sometimes the show starts out with the jumping problem and then looks better later.

The scourge of HD is that I have no idea where to begin trouble-shooting. It could be the network isn't broadcasting the signal properly. It could be that Comcast is throttling the signal somewhere. It could be that the CC isn't decoding the signal properly. It could be that the Tivo isn't formating the signal properly. It could be that our HD TV (a Sharp Aquos 46") isn't displaying the signal properly. The double frames could be happening anywhere in that signal chain.

Out Tivo is connected to the Sharp via an HDMI connection. We're sending the signal to the TV native (720p, as received over the cable). The signal strength for ESPN tonight was in the high 90's. No other HD channels appear to have the problem tonight, just ESPN. Nothing in any of the diagnostics looked 'odd', but it would have had to be blinking red for me to think it was out of whack (and that's despite my wife and I both being Electrical Engineers).

Has anyone else seen this?

I had the same issue tonight. I've only had the TiVo for a couple of weeks, and it had not done this before. It also only did it on certain channels.

I rebooted the TiVo, and this seems to have resolved the problem. Now everything is working fine - no skipped frames.

So, I suggest rebooting to see if the issue goes away. Good luck!

Thanks, I'll try a reboot. It's a 'comes and goes' problem. For example, this week we didn't see it. Next time I'll definitely see if rebooting makes a difference.
