View Full Version : Stopping the daily call nag - what's the best way?

I've recently upgraded my TiVo's hard drive using instant cake's software image.
The Box is a Philips DSR-704, software version is 6.2-01-2-301.

Things are working well, but that "daily call nag" that keeps popping up every
evening is becoming very annoying. Needless to say, it's never been connected
to a phone line.

After looking at several threads that seem to partially address this problem,
I chose to try the Superpatch-67all, and attempted to send it over to the TiVo.

This is where the trouble begins, since I'm using a laptop and connecting via
a serial connection. I get the "Bash" prompt, but I can see no way to just jam
the file(s) down the wire and into the TiVo using Putty's serial connection (v0.60)

So my questions are two. First is Superpatch-67all, the best way to achieve this
'upgrade'. And secondly, How can I get the laptop to send it over the wire and into
the TiVo?

Please note that I considered installing the Zipper, since it seems to do more,
but from my read of the instructions, it seemed that I had to re-format the drive
in order to use it. If there is a better or more modern patch, please let me know
about that too.

Thanks,
Swabbie.

You need fakecall.tcl. It's included with the zipper. The zipper doesn't require you to overwrite anything, it just offers it as an option in case you're starting from scratch. Never used Putty much, windoze' built in HyperTerminal works well for transferring files over serial connection. Just make sure to make your root filesystem writable first with mount -o remount,rw /

Thanks for the reply,

Found fakecall.tcl in rbautch_files.tgz, that's contained within the Zipper,
just as you said. I notice that there is also a "fakecall.osd" that seems
to go along with "fakecall.tcl". Do you know if this file is necessary, and
if so, where you put it?

Also, since I'm using Vista, HyperTermainl has been removed, this was
my first stumbling block, trying to find it, then learning it's been removed.

So I switched to Putty. Since there is no System Name, or IP address
known to me, I've been connecting via the serial port to the back of the
TiVo. So far, I've been unable to successfully transfer the file over to the
TiVo box, via the serial link, with Putty. If there was either a system name
or numerical IP address, I could use FTP.

If you can shed a little more additional light on this dilemma, it's sure help.

Thanks,
Swabbie

I just looked at that, it just looks like a shell script that won't matter in your situation.

Damn, that's stupid. Try teraterm pro or google for some other terminal programs. I'm sure you can find one that uses zmodem protocol like hyperterminal does.

Goon,

Thanks for your help. I remain stuck at being able to upload the file
fakecall.tcl into the TiVo box. I found a version of Putty that supports
zmodem (also x and y modem). I do the rz -b on the tivo side through
the dos box, and a few characters appear, with a repeating "CC", so the
TiVo box seems to be waiting for something.

Then I use Putty to "zmodem" upload fakecall.tcl, but nothing transfers,
and it just sits there, with no communication.

I'd happily try using FTP, I don't know what address or domain to FTP too.

Or I'd like to try telenet, but same thing, don't know what IP address to use.

So that's my dilemma. The Vista laptop wont' talk to the freshly formatted
instant cake TiVo, which continues to do the satellite TV function just fine.

Thanks,
Swabbie.
