Replace a Tivo/keep MSD

Here's my situation. I have an old tivo with MSD grandfathered at $6.95/mo no commit. I have a newer DT tivo that had a one-year prepay and now is at $16.95.

Here's what I'd like to do: Buy a new DT tivo to replace the old one. Transfer the newer DT tivo to the MSD account, and get a prepay package with hte newest Tivo.

Can I do this? What are the steps so this doesn't backfire on me?

Easy Peasy.

I don't think that you can buy an unactivated Tivo from Tivo, so buy somewhere else.

Swap TSNs off your old one to activate the new one you buy (painless, do via the web).

Call Tivo and tell them you want to commit to a contract to lower the rate on your $16.95 Tivo.

Another way (if you really want to purchase from Tivo):
1. Purchase new Tivo with plan of your choice.
2. Cancel service on your "free year" DT.
3. Use website to transfer service from old Tivo to "free year" DT.

Either way should work the same.

If that will work, that's what I'll do. Basically I have one machine I want to keep, and one service plan. But they're not together.

This says that you want to buy a DT to replace the old DT. You want to transfer the new DT to the MSD subscription. You want to get a prepay sub for the new DT

I'd buy this to replace my single tuner on the MSD.

What I'd like to do is transfer the MSD to my existing DT and then add the new DT purchased through this offer to my account

Is this last one your final answer?

If so, the new tivo has nothing to do with your plan and only complicates things when you are trying to explain what you want which is to cancel the current DT sub and then transfer service from the MSD tivo to that DT. All you have to do is do that and buy a new tivo.

1 cancel DT sub
2 transfer service number from old Tivo to DT

and then buy a new DT or buy a new DT first - doesn't matter.

I'm wrong. You would need to get and subscribe the new DT first so that you don't lose the MSD on the older Tivo.

No, I'm just confusing it with terminology.

Currently: (1) Single tuner with MSD, no contract
(2) Dual tuner, no contract at $16.95/month.

Considering buying dual tuner with prepay contract to replace (1) the single tuner. But I don't want to end up with MSD at $10.95/month.

If that dual tuner's(2) contract has run out, do this:
Get second dual tuner(3) on prepay-"full price" (only way to get prepay)
Cancel first Dual Tuner(2). Replace TSN of first tuner(1) with TSN of first Dual Tuner(2)

It's more your grammar (not that I'm an expert on it), that's why it doesn't make sense.
Like when you said "Buy a new DT tivo to replace the old one." We now know that you meant the older tivo on MSD when you said "old one" but in the context of the sentence it means the old DT.

No worries, I understood completely.

As long as you don't cancel the Tivo with that plan, and that Tivo is never the only Tivo you have service on, you're golden.

One other question: If I cancel and reactivate the dual tuner I already have, will I lose the programs recorded on it? I can use MRV to transfer them, but I'd rather not go to the hassle. Or will they remain on there when I reactivate?

Obviously I won't have access to the programs on the permanently deactivated unit.

You will have access to recorded programs on the permanently deactivated unit. That is one thing that continues to work when you cancel your subscription. The other is the ability to pause, rewind, etc live tv.
