View Full Version : Tiger Direct $99 email-only sale on Series 3?

A co-worker of mine said he got a Tivo Series 3 recently for $99 from Tiger Direct(.com) in an email-only sale. I assumed he meant a TivoHD but he insists its a Series 3.
Anyone have evidence either way? He hasn't always been entirely truthful with me in the past and I'd really like to call him on it. Much thanks in advance.

I have no evidence, but as an avid reader of this forum I can tell you that if there had been such a sale, it would have been known here.
Even a TiVoHD at that price sounds highly unlikely.
He's not entirely truthful here either. At best, he could mean a Series 2 DT, IMO. At worst, he's just making stuff up completely.

Thanks MickeS. I tend to think he's fabricating things as he likes to get a reaction out of me. We have political debates on occasion and I've caught him lying outright just to get under my skin on numerous occasions so I don't trust him anymore. I suspect he's trying to, yet again, irk me because he knows that I paid $400-500 or so for my Series 3 (can't remember, but it was a lot less than retail).
I told him that there's no way he got one for $99, not even refurbed. I asked Alex over at Tivoblog.com (http://www.tivoblog.com) and he hadn't heard of it either.
I doubt he even got a TiVo (Series 2, 3 or HD) at all, considering his deceptions...

No way. As a retailer TigerDirect isn't in the business of losing money, and even though TiVo might take a hit on hardware (to recoup through subscription fees) I doubt they'd do a deal like that through a third-party.

Let it be an example in learning how to spot the people to ignore.

Thanks for everyone's replies. You're probably right, HDTiVo. I guess I'm a bludgeon for punishment. I asked him to send me a photo of it and use me for those tivo rewards/reference thing they have, so we'll see where this gets me. I just really wish I could call him on it. It's kind of like my late uncle who used to go around saying he was an ex-marine. My dad, of course, being his brother, knew better. While my dad never called him on it, I definitely would like to call this guy on his ********...
I don't know why people make **** up like that.
Edit: Neat, didn't know that "b&lls@t" or "sh*t" would get filtered. Heh. Didn't even know that they used filters here.

You should watch The Big Kahuna and take notes on how to call people on BS.

That should have exposed his fraud - marines are retired, not ex. :D

Yeah, everyone's right about all this. He said he "loved it" or something and now via email correspondence he admits he hasn't even unpacked it (he's moving). I asked him if he got his cable cards yet. This will help reveal his lie. If he says, "what's a cable card" once he gets it hooked up, I'll know he's lying. I'm pretty sure he's got a Series 2... MAYBE a refurbed TiVoHD but I doubt it, as davezatz says.

Heh. Yeah, I can see that. The thing is, he's dead now, so it doesn't matter. I just find it silly for people to live in fantasy worlds. I mean, I fantasize sometimes but I don't live a lie and tell others fabrications. And the worst lie of all is to call yourself a soldier when you weren't because it dishonors the real soldiers who fought and died. He was in the Air Force, and I'm not sure why he'd make up this story about the Marines, but he did. Oh well. He's dead, so I guess we can forgive him his minor transgressions. :)

Maybe the S3 at $99.00 was sold out... Point is there are no $99 Tivo's at TD as of now

Well you CAN be an ex-marine... you just have to get kicked out of the service to be one :P

If you're going to lie, at least lie well.
Your co-worker said he got it from Tiger Direct? That's the worst etailer in the business and even if I saw a true advertised sale from them, I'd pass on the deal. He should have said a Best Buy open box or something to really get your goat. :D

Yeah. I hate Tiger Direct as well. I bought a computer from them back in '98/99ish and it was pure garbage. I will never do business with them again. I'll stick to amazon.com/newegg/Apple for my computing/electronics needs henceforth...
