I think this is how we did it before instead of a weekly one. We're already behind!
I'm soooo glad to have Jillian back. She rocks! I was so glad to see Amber be the first one off. She was the Biggest Whiner! Sorry to see grandpa go too, he would have done well. He did take more lbs off when he went home and look great. Patty went home, has lost more weight, but she's STILL big!!
So they're shutting the gym down for a week? Shouldn't be a problem for the black team. That's how they started off.

What's with the continued....... What are they continuing.
On topic, if anything closing the gym should help the black team, they went without the gym for the time before the showed up, they're more used to improvising.

I only watch this show because the SO does.
Three teams=entirely too much time spent at weigh-ins. They don't even really show them working out anymore.
That, and this is one of the worst shows on right now for spending the first minute after after ad break doing a recap... My attention span isn't that short....

I too hate the big recaps. 30 second skip is your friend. :p
I'm pissed they kicked off the old man. What was the logic there? To boot off the best loser? Made no sense to me. I do like the show though, these are my people. I have been there and done that (more than once unfortunately) and I can relate to their struggles. :p

I hope Holly got to see her mom before she passed. I was a little choked up when they announced it.
Kim is gonna tear her team a new one after finding out it came to a tie. It was because of Phil that they won the challenge on the beach. I hope they fall apart now.

Kim is such a jerk. If she were my trainer, I would fire her ass. She has no idea how to motivate people. Bob might be bit too easy but Jillian seems to get her people to work hard.

I was thinking the same thing as I watched last night, IJLT. Kim just seems to pi$$ her people off. Jillian tends to bring out the fighting spirit in people...fighting with their previous lifestyle and habits, not their trainer. If I were paying for a trainer, first choice would be Jillian.

I haven't been watching this season, but happened to catch a commercial where they said someone manipulated the game and someone gains 17 pounds?? (Not sure if that aired yet so I spoiled it).
Can anyone fill me in? That's intriguing.

What is up with Neil? Does anyone else think he's taking something to help him lose so much weight? I know he put on 17 lbs and then lost 33, but to drop another big number this week?
I hope Kim's last red team member goes next week so she goes too. That'll show 'em that Jillian was the best trainer all along.

My wife and I were shocked by this too. We chalked it up to him being "young" and he probably has good genetics underneath all that padding. We surmise he is a "thin person in a fat body" and his "inner athlete" is simply busting out. It never occurred to me there might be a drug involved.
I can't imagine what he could take that would cause him to lose all that weight in one week. Unless it was water weight and it clearly couldn't be based on the huge weight loss the week before. If there is a drug that can do that, I'd like some myself... If he is taking "performance enhancing" drugs that would be a fun scandal... :p

I don't know if Neil is taking anything or not, but I do remember the majority of the contestants from seasons 1 & 2 putting up monster numbers for like 8 weeks straight. Since season 3, the contestants have been putting up modest weight loss numbers each week.
I have a bit of inside info because a friend of my family was on one of the TBL Specials (the ones with the families) and her husband just about died from a lack of electrolytes. It was so bad that their special wasn't aired on NBC, and instead aired on the Internet only. I'm thinking that they had to drastically change the way they trained the contestants because it got to be too dangerous the way they were training before season 3. Just my guess.

I was glad to see Hollie get a visit home. She really cranked at the swimming! I was really hoping to see her with her family since her mom really passed away. Why would she want to see her friends more than her family? :( I think she's going to look hawt when it's all over. You can start to see she has good facial structure.
Hollie did rock at the swimming. But I felt bad for Kae, who seemed clearly to be in the best shape (and works sooooo hard all the time, I really admire her attitude) but just wasn't a strong swimmer.
This is the first season I've ever watched this show. I'm surprized by all the "gameplay" and sabotage and throwing weigh-ins and all of that. Just seems so counter-productive to the healthy weight-loss focus of the show. Especially the throwing the weigh-ins. Is it always like this, or is this just a whacked-out group of contestants?
Also the in-show infomercials are a little over the top.

that "triathlon" was completely unfair. In a normal triathlon once you start the race you keep any lead you gain throughout the whole race. Essentially, this was 3 different races, ending with the swimming and Hollie is a swim coach! The others didn't have a chance. I kept yelling at the screen for Kae to relax on the bike, come in 6th, then 3rd and save your energy for the swimming. As it was, Kae worked her butt of on the bike for no benefit. If they had allowed her to keep her lead, like a real triathlon, the swimming may have been much closer.
The easy answer for me on the "pick somebody to take on your reward" is always the 2nd place person. They earned it and nobody can fault you for the decision and get po'd.

Agree 100%. That was bogus. All you had to do to "win" was win the swimming leg of the triathlon.

I decided the reason they did the triathalon that way was to eliminate the need for the rushed transition stage where you are changing clothes. But, they should have given time credits for those who were ahead in earlier legs, so you could maintain your advantage. Not sure if it would have been enough to help Kae though. :(
Also, I've never heard of a triathalon where swimming wasn't the first event. Seems prudent for safety reasons.

Truly. What were they thinking? They HAD all the finishing times. All they had to do was add them up to see who has the lowest "cumulative time". But you're right of course. I really wanted Kae to win. She seems to be the only one who is taking this thing seriously. I mean really. Did you see that donut feeding frenzy? +1  Amy was whiny and had major attitude for someone who needed help, received it, and was unhappy when her trainer did not provide her with 100% support of every stupid decision she made. Unfortunately, I think Neil is going to win and he deserves it less than anyone.

I wasn't thrilled with Amy but thought Kim was a beyotch too.
Amy is a light skinned black woman married to a white man. Her two daughters are both very white, and they didn't even get curly hair!!! :(

I wish they would get rid of the stupid voting system, and just have the person with the least amount of weight loss (percentage) for that week to go home.
We get our voting fix from Survivor and Big Brother. Let this one be based soley on the work of the players.

I wish they could come up with something better than what they are doing now. The worst people vote off the best people. Not fun. The only problem with going "straight percentage" is that the human body sometimes will dump a lot of weight one week and none the next. I'm was thinking something along the same lines, only make it so the trainers get a vote and work that into the equation along with weight loss. The way it is now kind of wrecks the show for me to some degree. Seeing that old guy get voted off the first week was a downer.

Thank god that Amy is gone. She was horrible.
I am having a hard time rooting for any of these contestants this year. I'm not particularly impressed with any of them.
I want to like Kae, because she does work her butt off (literally!), but her surly attitude and condescending demeanor is off-putting. Although she got robbed during the "triathlon" which was no triathlon at all, but instead was a series of 3 separate races that gave everything to the winner of the final race. That was ridiculously unfair, and totally set up for Hollie to win, if she made it that far.
Julie is always playing the martyr (waaah, I don't want to work, we can't afford a car), and Isabeau should be losing more weight.
Neil is a tool, and the water-loading is inexcusable. They should make that against the rules, and throw out anyone who gains more than 1 pound in one week.
I like B and Bill, I guess. The only person I really like is Bob.
This show would be unwatchable without TiVo. Unlike The Amazing Race, which maximizes the entertainment value through editing and production choices, TBL sucks every ounce of entertainment out of what could be a good show. But the manufactured "drama" is so cheesy and over the top, and the stupid "twists" are just, um, stupid. Every episode is 90% filler nonsense and recaps of what we just saw.

+1. And even worse, practically every episode is 1.5 or 2 hours long, purely b/c of the filler! I can take some filler in a regular 1-hour show, but if you don't have more than an hour of material, you just shouldn't have a super-long show! 1 hour (or less) should be the norm for a reality show unless there is some really, truly compelling reason that you can't fit all the material into a regular time slot.

Last year the episodes were an hour and we're not getting any more info than we did then. They started the weigh in this week at about 1 hour and 2 minutes. WDF?
BTW, I do think Neil should be ineligible to win for what he did.

I don't think Kae can make it all the way. She's lost a lot of weight so far and I think she may be getting close to her ideal weight. At some point I think she'll be below the yellow line and then the rest will take her out quickly.
I also hate that it's two hours and most of it filler crap. I also hate that NBC shows previews ahead of time, not only during the show, but as commercials during other shows. A few weeks ago they showed previews of Neil reaching the 100lb milestone, and then last week the preview was of the twin reaching his milestone. Then yesterday they showed a preview of what's happening tonight.

Not necessarily. Kae is super petite (5'1" or 5'2" iirc), and she could conceivably get down to 110 without being underweight. Remember Poppi? She got down to 115 and I think she started out bigger than Kae.
I agree that it will be hard for Kae to win at all, because it's always easier for the biggest people to win the whole thing, but I don't think she's anywhere near her ideal weight yet. Isn't she still in the 160s? She could keep losing for another 50 pounds, and she has shown again and again that she's willing to keep doing the work every single week to stay above that line.

Yes, Neil is a dick. But some people love people like that anyway. I have no idea why. I haven't found one that will tolerate me.... ;)
I think Kae looks good but given the fact that they did this over almost 9 months, it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility that they can do that.
I'm somewhat more amazed that the big guys can keep sustaining the pace. I think that right now they've been at the camp for 3 months and two of them are over 100 lbs. Even for big men, that's amazing for a short period. If they keep up that pace, neil has a potential to equal the winner last time at around 200 lbs.

How is it a "spoiler" if it already happened on the show? And how can we discuss the show without talking about stuff that happened on the show?
I watched the two-minute recap, so thanks, JFriday.
That's too bad that Kae was voted off, it demonstrates the ridiculousness of the entire "voting off" procedure, one of my biggest issues with the show (among many others). The whole point of the show is to reward the Biggest Loser, and voting off the Biggest Loser defeats the purpose entirely. Kae's weight loss was especially impressive given how small she was.
They should call this show "The Biggest Loser out of the remaining peopole who weasel their way into the final episode." :p

gchance

I realize you're not new, you've posted well over 1500 times. I said that because you seem to be oblivious to the spoiler police. This thread seems to be under their radar because it's not the most popular show around here...
You can discuss the show, but the convention is to surround it with spoiler tags:
[ spoiler ] stuff [ /spoiler ]
Remove the spaces. People record the shows and watch them later, so this takes them into consideration. This particular thread is for the entire season, so if someone came in to see what comments people had about last week's episode but not this one, without the spoiler tags they could accidentally find out information about it.
So when you discuss a particular episode
Surround it in spoiler tags.
The exception, of course, would be in threads where the individual episodes are being discussed. If the thread title here was something like, "Biggest Loser OAD 11-20-07 *SPOILERS*" then spoiler tags are unnecessary because they're implied in the thread title. If a person comes into the thread and whines about spoilers, that's their own fault.
Anyway, that's that. I'm only telling you about it to avoid serious threadcrapping due to spoiler police. That is all. I personally don't care about spoilers.
Greg

In a whole season discussion thread I've always thought it was okay to talk about the show without spoilers. I would assume people don't come into this thread until they've seen this week's episode.
I've been rooting for Hollie, but secretly I want her to go home just so I can see her transformation. She's gonna look terrific.
I now see the transformation Nicole is having. It wasn't until last night that I noticed her calves and how toned they looked. Her arms are still flabby, but part of them looked toned. Once she loses the rest of the weight she's gonna look terrific also.
I cringed when Nicole jumped in the pool and chipped her tooth, but then when everyone else was laughing it off it wasn't so bad. I actually laughed out loud when Julie was making fun of her speech. What a good trooper she was about the incident.
gchance
11-28-2007, 03:35 PM
Well that's interesting. I'm not sure how it's spoiler tags are supposed to work in email, but I had thought they'd at least be removed. Nope, what was in your spoiler tags was there. Until I came to the thread, I had no idea you had enclosed it in the tags.
At any rate, Hollie really rubbed me wrong personality-wise early on (I think it was the first episode, one of the contestants who was voted off got a berating by Hollie for not "pulling her own weight). I think she's made great strides, but the person I'm really pulling for is Jim. He's the man!

I don't hate either and my only beef with Jilian is that she left of her own accord to pursue her newfound fame and fortune, only to find out that she was better off to have stayed where she was. Now she comes back and basically picks up where she left off in terms of seniority (or so it seems, did you notice whose pictures were front and center on the DVD's they sell? Not Kims...). Just a personal "loyalty" peeve. If she worked for me, she wouldn't be able to come back so easily. I do agree she gets better results though. :p

I haven't watched this show before this season. I'm not a fan of Kim, I don't think I would get along with her. I like Jillian, she knows how to kick arse and how to be compassionate. Kim doesn't seem to have a compassionate or motivating bone on her bone.
I have to say I'm really interesting in seeing the contestants that have left the show in the beginning.

Wow, two teams eliminated. That says a lot for Jillian. Four out of 6 team members in the finale. Wow, 10 lbs wasn't enough to keep Neil above the yellow line. That was the best move though, to vote him out, otherwise I'm sure he would have won it all.
I really like Bill. I noticed at this weigh in that Hollie is starting to look like an average size woman. Good for her.

I'm really looking forward to the finale. I'm sad that Neil isn't in the final 4, but I understand why they voted him out.
I hope one of the girls wins it, but I doubt they will. I bet Bill wins. :)

I missed 0:48 to 0:57 (accidentally powered down my DVR :( ), so I didn't see Neil get voted off. How much weight did he lose after leaving the show?

I was so damn happy when neil was voted off. What goes around comes around neil deserved to be booted. It took a while but thankfully justice was served. It will be interesting to see who wins. I am not sure how much more bill could lose. The women this time around have a great chance unlike last season.

Which begs the question. Which two trainers will be back next year, or will it be all three again? I'd hate to see Kim get the boot just because Jillian's "other" career path didn't pan out the way she'd hoped. On the other hand, people seem to respond better to Jillian and you can't argue with her results. I'm guessing Kim may be gone next year... That probably won't disappoint too many folks. Kim just can't seem to get people to like her. Even the horny geeks around here don't seem to connect with her. That's pretty bad considering the "hotness factor" at play. :D

Nah, with all the couples, they'll need more trainers, not less.
So, no one watched the final?
No big surprise except for the fact that the biggest losers was one of the castoffs....

Dude... the finale ended at 11pm. The bed was calling.
The trainers for Biggest Loser Couples are Jillian & Bob, Kim is not involved. From the scuttlebutt over at the NBC boards, she opted not to return, she wasn't canned.
No big surprise? Jim's weight loss wasn't a surprise? Holy CRAP it shocked the hell out of me. He was eliminated in week 5, there were 14 weeks total. In week 5, he had lost 54 pounds, or 15% of his body weight. What this means is ON HIS OWN, away from the campus, he lost 132 pounds, I forget the final body weight total but it was something like 51%, maybe more... so the remaining 36% he wasn't in the Biggest Loser bubble.
Almost all the contestants, eliminated or not, did great. In the end though, I think the key with the twins in the end was their brotherly competition AND support. That dynamic is with all contestants with the Couples show and I think we'll see similar results with some, if not all, of them there.
Have you guys listened to Jillian's radio show? I think the way they portray her on Biggest Loser is very different, you listen to her on that show and she's extremely personable.
Here's something that was totally hilarious... one thing Jillian says a LOT on the radio show (and probably in real life) is "at the end of the day". She claims she got it from Bob, but anyway, when they talked to Neil about what he did, one of the first things out of his mouth was, "at the end of the day".
Those are my thoughts. I still think Kae kicked major ass, but Jim & Bill are animals. Oh, and Jerry's a hoot. As Alison whatshername said, "Jerry, put your shirt on", hehe.

Where was security at that show? How did they let the twins in the studio packing those guns?
This was the first season I watched in high def and I saw a ton of loose skin as contestants were waving to the crowd. I think I will watch the next season on the regular channels.:p

Bad news, Biggest Loser isn't in HD. :) At least my NBC affiliate doesn't broadcast it in HD... in-between promos are HD and so are the shows surrounding it.
The loose skin wouldn't have been a problem had it not been for Topless Jerry. He just had to show off his physique. You know what, though? Those folks earned it.
Also if you look at the twins, they don't appear to have loose skin. You mentioned the guns, no kidding, Jim's arms are huge!

It would have been a bigger surprise but they showed him at about 100 when they had the magazine shoot episode where each contestant looked in the mirror and it opened to show a relative. Jim was there and said he was already at 100 lbs before Bill had gotten there.

Does anyone think that they'll ever try to give the women an advantage somehow? It really isn't realistic to think that a women will ever win, otherwise, as evidenced by the fact that the top 3 losers were men.

I'm not jaded but not surprised either. Anyone who was able to lose 100 lbs in the first 4 months was going to keep losing weight if they kept exercising. By losing as the same rate as his brother who was still there, that indicated that he was still working out pretty hard. Why would he stop in the next 4 months, especially since he had the advantage of having a workout buddy all the time which the other contestants did not. Additionally, he started bigger than Bill by almost 30 lbs.
And both Neil and Jim lost more by percentage but were eliminated first.
Don't misunderstand me, I am amazed at how much weight they lost. But, the heaviest person who makes the final four always wins.
Ryan in year one
Matt in Year two
Eric in year three
Bill in year four

My wife and I were discussing this last night. Men have less natural body fat and build muscle faster than women. Even with using percentages it's still not a level playing field. I think the fairest thing would be to have two winners. Biggest lady loser and biggest man loser. Otherwise, the only way I can see to make it somewhat more even is if they put extremely overweight young women against moderately overweight middle aged men. :p

The only way to have a woman win is to have only women compete. flame away, but women just do not lose weight like men do!
These folks have a lot to be commended for! I really wish I could take the time out of my life and go away to a fit camp, learn things, get amazing training and then hopefully continue on in my own life. It's a goal/dream of mine.

They don't lose as much as fast, but over time they can lose weight like men. Absolutely.
It's hard as hell to lose weight whether you're a man or a woman.

Yes, except in this case they have a finite amount of time in which to lose said weight...

I think when she said women don't lose weight the way men do, she was speaking within the context of the show. The main difference being that they lose it slower than men. Which in fact, supports your post. So I guess we're good. ;)

The kid made a comment about that as we were watching. He was quite impressed by both of them.
Speaking of the dangly skin, I think Amy had some of the worst. I did like how Hollie and Julie both and nice looking arms. Hollie looked like her legs were small, and Julie looked pettite overall, which I never thought could happen. Isabeau sure is a pretty girl, and I'm sure this has given her lots of confidence. I did think she looked older than 21 though. Usually with weight loss they look younger.
Even the castoffs looked super thin. To me, especially, I thought the former football player, and boy did he look hot.
