Believe it: ABC has asked "Veronica Mars" creator Rob Thomas to start working on a new version of his cult favorite "Cupid," which aired way back in the 20th century (the 1998-99 season, to be exact). Thomas has a development deal with ABC Studios and has been kicking around new version of the show with executives there.

OK, so it probably won't be with Paula Marshall and Jeremy Piven, but it's still Rob Thomas's show, and that is good enough to look forward to.

I watched the original only for Paula Marshall. Without her, I'd have no reason to watch. It was where I first discovered how good Jeremy was. It would also suck without his nifty sarcastic take on Cupid.

Cupid was a great show. Paula and Jeremy were great together.

I am a big fan of both Jeremy Piven and Paula Marshall, but they did not write the words nor create the characters, although they certainly added to what was on the page. As he's proven with Veronica Mars, Rob Thomas will have little trouble finding more good actors to bring his stories to life.

Not really. Piven seems to bring that snarky attitude to most of his roles. If you watched his reality program where he traveled to India, he seems to pretty much channel that attitude.

I have a feeling Piven brought a lot of himself to that role. It was typical Piven. Piven and John Cusack grew up in the same theater group (belonged to Piven's parent's), and you can see it, especially when they are playing off of each other in a film.

I liked Cupid and have no doubt that they can find a pair of actors just as capable, but it' more than just playing a role as written. There's no doubt that fans liked the show because of Jeremy Piven.

I LOVED this show. It is on my top 5 list of "Brilliant but canceled" list. :) The show gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling every week. I champion it every time a "what shows did you hate to see canceled" list appears on a forum.

I hope this goes to air....would love to see it "again" in an incarnation.

An official DVD release of the original show would be awesome too. :)

+1

I've always wanted to meet Piven just so I could ask him if the show had been allowed to go on to a natural conclusion, what would have been the end story for his character, was he really Cupid or really deranged?

What if he was both Cupid AND deranged?

I loved how Piven actually worked "reacharound" in it's correct usage into a line on a network show. It seemed he tried to use one arcane sexual term somehow in each show, having to explain why I suddenly burst out laghing at some of them to my wife (and how I knew what they meant) was always fun. Ari Gold says what he wants on an HBO show today, Cupid was sneaking them in under the S&P guys way back when.

One of the first shows I ever loved that got canceled. I think the first was probably Profit.

I would love to see Cupid with an Ari Gold edge. :D ;)

It was a really good show, and I was dissapointed when it was cancelled.

Since JP probably isn't going to be available, I'd like to see Ryan Reynolds as Cupid.

They should cast John Cusack, just for the irony. :D

From that I assume that JP took a role from JC?

JC and JP are friends from "the old days" and for a long time when JC was big and JP was still on the way up, JC would throw JP a bone and arrange for JP to get a part in any movie he was invovled in.

Do a joint ventures search on IMDB and you should find 11 movies.

4. Grifters, The (1990) 7.0/10 (7809 votes)
5. Grosse Pointe Blank (1997) 7.4/10 (28962 votes)

I'm actually surprised Cusack hasn't made a cameo on Entourage yet.

This is mostly because of the looming writers strike. RT already had some Cupid scripts written and is being paid to write mores so if the writers strike they have something "new" to put on TV.

Bumping this thread as reportedly the 'new' version of Cupid will be coming through in the new TV season on ABC.
