they make hi deff decoders for direct tv right? can i use my regular box to watch the high deff channels with a seperate decoder box? how about recording with it?

No MPEG4 not MPEG2 and you will need 5 LNB Dish

OP. If you're asking what I think you are, the answer is no. You need an HD receiver (H20 or H21) or an HD DVR (HR20/21) to watch and record ALL the HD channels on D*.

If you want to stick with the TiVo interface, currently your only option is to find a used HR10-250, which will give you limited HD channels (certain MPEG2 channels plus OTA if available).

Your current SD box will not output anything that can be converted using some kind of decoder box.
