HEY! As you can tell im new here and have a few questions about purchasing a tivo or a dvr from my direct tv service. Im very understanding of tech terms and love to hack/mod/alter my products. Moving to my question, with my direct tv service i have the option to upgrade to the DirecTV Plus dvr which i understand to be the r-15 (which from what i read SUCKS!). As excited i am, i just dont think that dvr will achieve my expectations. I travel a lot and sometimes dont have the time to sit at home and watch all the shows that i record, so i want a device that i can extract the videos from and watch them on my laptop while on trips/vacations/flying. I hope my question doesn't offend anyone and if it does, i have no problem altering this post!

Since you travel a lot, I'd suggest that you get a DVD recorder with hard drive. Record from your current receiver (or a DVR) and dump to a DVD.
