View Full Version : Two tuners and one satellite line

I have my DTivo hooked up with one satellite line (no access to a second line) and an antenna line. Is the Tivo "smart" enough to know to only use the first tuner to get satellite signals and use either tuner for antennas? I tried setting up the receiver indicating only one satellite line but I wasn't able to record two OTA signals concurrently. Is there a solution?

Thanks,

I'll assume you have the HR10. The HR10 has two "virtual" tuners with a sat and OTA teamed together. Thus, with only one sat tuner enabled you can only record one show at a time, either sat or OTA. If you setup the HR10 as dual tuner, you can then record two OTAs, but you'll get searching for signal on the second tuner for the satellite.

Thanks Jim.

Yes, I have the HR10, HD Tivo. I set up the HR 10 as dual tuner but how can I make sure that all the directv content is recorded on Tuner 1 and OTA is recorded on Tuner 2, if Tuner 1 set a priority with a directv show? Is Tivo that smart?

You can record two things at once. Doesn't make a difference what Tuner (Sat1or2,OTA1or2). Yes TiVo is that smart.

Except that the OP only has one sat line connected, thus can only record from the sat or OTA. With one line, but having the HR10 setup as dual tuner, you will get missed recordings. The unit isn't that smart. There's no way to force it to record on one particular tuner.

Thanks Jim. That's what I thought that I'd be missing recordings. It would be nice if you could input it as a single tuner and the box would always know to tune satellite shows to tuner one and OTA shows to tuner 2 or tuner 1 if available. With it set as a single tuner, I'll never have a chance to record two shows at once, even if I do have OTA. Too bad.

Agreed. The user needs to be smart enough to configure the TiVo for the way he has it connected.

Yeah, it's a shame the Tivo can't do this. I had mine hooked up like this for a while due to the wiring situation in a place we were renting. It would have been nice to have 2 OTA tuners available, even though I only had 1 Sat line.

Ah well, what are you gonna do.

Most of my recording will be OTA so I'll take my chances about missing the occasional directv show.

Uhhhh. There is a bug with one line connected.

I have given up on the satellite portion of recording. The OTA works fine.

See what I ran into here:

Weird, I never ran into that problem when I had only one line connected. I'm still on 3.5.1f, I'm wondering if that's why I haven't seen it.

Yeah, I think 6.x is the problem. Hoping they fix it with the update coming in 2008 but the HR10 is getting less useful for satellite as the MPEG4 HD comes on line and it works fine for OTA.
