I "purchased" them but i have no idea what's going to happen now:

A) Will it download and be viewable now, or only after it airs?
B) Will it be in HD or still in SD with letterboxing?

A) They download and are viewable now
B) The Unbox website shows file format details.

For example Bionic Woman:

Precisely. Why would I download the SD letterboxed edition when my TiVo will already pick up the show, in HD, when it airs?

For me? Because I have limited HD tuner space, there are collisions between premieres, and I want to preview so I know which shows will get relegated to the SD tuners.

It's a rhetorical question. Have you never heard of them?

Seemed less rhetorical and more like trolling to me.
Since I thought you were trolling for a response, I thew you one...

Generally a rhetorical question has an obvious “answer”, which is then taken as being the response.

In this case there are several reasonable responses:
Precisely. Why would I download the SD letterboxed edition when my TiVo will already pick up the show, in HD, when it airs?

1) You want to watch the show as soon as possible and spoil it for your friends
2) You want to purchase the episode in your media library so you can go back and watch it years later (assuming Unbox is still around)
3) You want to watch it on your portable device and still don't have TTG on your HD TiVo
4) You don't want to use up HDTV HD space for oversized recording of junk TV
5) You have some recording conflict
6) You want to preview it for general acting and cinematography before committing your HD TiVo to record it

I could go on but why... In my book your question was far from rhetorical, perhaps next time you can rephrase so there is less chance of confusion.

More Unbox Free Downloads (http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/?ie=UTF8&docId=1000128561)My experience is that you will be charged for these downloads, despite the header that says free.

Hopefully just some glitch in my browser, and they are in fact free.

EDITED TO ADD: The four individual shows work fine; I'm referring to the link above, which in my case goes to a screen labelled "Free Downloads" which includes several other shows. When I download them, a charge is incurred.

Are you talking about the sidebar that says: "Unbox Top Sellers"?

Some of the free programs end up in the top sellers, but most are episodes you must pay for.

All of the episodes in the "Free Downloads" box are free.

Just like you can see a side bar of top sellers on the Free Downloads page, you can go to http://unbox.amazon.com/ and see the sidebar list of Free Unbox Downloads.

In that box are: 300, Shooter, BS, M&L, BI, TMNT, Zodiak and Breach.

Charges are incurred for all of those.

I don't see the list you mention.

I just tried Safari on a Mac, and the box is empty. Just, again, tried Windows/Explorer and I again get the non-free movies I mentioned above.

The list you are referring to is to the right on that page. If you look straight down, you should see (right now) a large "Battlestar Galactica" logo, then underneath that, a row of smaller logos for various programs.

The page does heavily use Flash, so if you don't have Flash installed you may not see it. Additionally, if you are blocking ads or JavaScript, the page also may not load properly.

Interesting, did you try forcing a refresh, or clicking on the Green "Free Downloads" above the filmstrip list?
It sounds like you are somehow getting a list of movies that are bestsellers or have been in the 99¢ sale over time.
At first I had trouble getting the NBC shows to appear in this Free Download list and had just cached a free of the older free movies.
Either the refresh or the Green Free DOwnlods link fixed it, not sure which.

1) You want to watch the show as soon as possible and spoil it for your friends

This, to me, is the only reason why I might find this feature compelling and the one I had in mind as the "unspoken answer" to my post you find trollsome.

I'd personally rather wait and see the shows in HD, even if they're "throwaway" TV. And even if I didn't have an HD TiVo, the downloads pretty much duplicate convenience I already have. And it's easier for me to schedule a season pass on the TiVo than to fuss through Amazon's ordering and download process.

2) You want to purchase the episode in your media library so you can go back and watch it years later (assuming Unbox is still around)

I'd rather archive my own shows, and your suggestion about the longevity of Unbox underscores my point. None of these online media distribution services have any sort of record for longevity.

3) You want to watch it on your portable device and still don't have TTG on your HD TiVo

Perhaps, if I actually had a portable device. But I didn't say that, so you got me there.

5) You have some recording conflict

Hadn't considered that one, but you were right to put it #5 on the list.

4) You don't want to use up HDTV HD space for oversized recording of junk TV
6) You want to preview it for general acting and cinematography before committing your HD TiVo to record it

These are both special cases of "don't have enough disk space", in which case I'd simply expand the storage space on my TiVo.

I could go on but why... In my book your question was far from rhetorical, perhaps next time you can rephrase so there is less chance of confusion.

Hope I've cleared things up for you.

Actually, in my case, it's a case of "I only have the two HD tuners and in some time slots there are 3 HD shows that I might want to record." In this way, I can see ahead of time whether it's a show that I want in HD (Oooh, purdy) or a show I can live without it on (Like Criminal Minds, which works just fine in SD for me.)

Yeah, I see how that could work out for you. For a more active TV watcher, the downloads could be a definite help. Personally, I'm not a really big TV watcher. I only had the occasional conflict even with one tuner, and with two tuners for close to a year now I've yet to see a three-way conflict appear.

Hope I've cleared things up for you.

I would point out to you just because you have a complete inability to see why those might be valid reasons, does not make the original question rhetorical.

As the other person noted, a rhetorical question is something that most be agree has a singular obvious answer. I suspect you among a small minority here who holds the position there is no reason to download these shows because they are not in HD. And among the few who might even agree with you, I suspect you are the only one who was completely unable to comprehend other people might have different motivations and reasons for doing things different from yourself.

As for the thread, thanks for the link, I have downloaded all the free episodes, and am looking forward to checking them out. I have seen the Big Bang Theory and Caveman so far, and I am less than excited so far. I figure the more shows I can discount before the seasons begin, the easier it will be to avoid conflicts.

mportuesi
09-10-2007, 06:49 PM
I suspect you among a small minority here who holds the position there is no reason to download these shows because they are not in HD.

That would be correct.

Perhaps I can be a little more explicit: Unbox/Tivo's biggest weakness is that it's not competitive with other media outlets in terms of the actual quality of the content. That is what I really wanted to draw attention to. The biggest advantage of these downloads is that they are available now, which isn't enough of a compensation for people who have worked hard to get HD content into our homes to make us interested in Unbox as a distribution channel.

There's a secondary advantage to three-way conflicts, etc. which is great for some people but that's hardly something to write home about. And I'm willing to bet it's actually easier to use TTG from my Series 2 to get content on my (hypothetical) portable device, rather than try to convert an Unbox download, with its encumbering DRM.

And among the few who might even agree with you, I suspect you are the only one who was completely unable to comprehend other people might have different motivations and reasons for doing things different from yourself.

I think I've already demonstrated otherwise two posts up in this thread.

Your better off waiting a couple weeks or more for the 'real' first episode... but you are going to wade through commercials. But thats what torrents are for on release day + 1

Unbox really hit a homerun on these episodes ... I generally was not happy with the rental costs .. it was on par with renting from blockbuster, etc, but that hasn't been relevant for years. The price of one rental is netflix money for MANY more movies.

$.99 downloads, free downloads, are really a step in the right direction. Has anyone actually bought a movie from unbox (not rented, bought) ... what the hell are you going to do with a < HD quality movie married to the tivo ?

It's pretty cool. I downloaded three of them (I saw Journeyman through another means). I've watched Bionic Woman, and the quality was awesome, for an Unbox video. Better than most of the SD channels coming in from my cable.

The show itself was okay... I'll set a season pass and see where it goes. :)

Its a great ploy for NBC to release the new pilots to the web (via unbox) early to have the potential of hooking a number of new viewers before their inundated with the pilots from the other networks. I for one have downloaded all of the new episodes and plan on checking them out... sd and all.

I was actually planning on inviting a number of friends over for the Bionic season premiere and now have the ability to have a NBC Pilot premier party this weekend instead of on a Wednesday.

I agree that better quality (near HD) would be nice and would be the "killer" upgrade for unbox.

They show up in Now Playing in a special folder named Amazon Unbox.

Did you send them to the right TiVo? How long has it been since you completed the order on Amazon?

RoundBoy

My transfer starts pretty fast. And i think i read unbox is trying to lower the lag from purchase to download to almost zero...

I was ready to totally give up on this service beyond my initial $15 credit... then 'shooter' came out for $.99 (waste of $.99) and these free previews.

Its about time they realized they can beat the torrent traffic by offering them... before I buy my HD set, I would transfer to my tivo before i start the process to torrent it -> convert -> transfer to tivo ... although I have that almost automated now.

I'm at a crossroads... I like my tivo, but its about to be brushed aside for a mythtv server and set top boxes that can do much more.... the only thing stopping me is ease of use, and the lack or real options to connect to HD content. There are not so easy solutions to get HD content via cable cards & digital set top boxes in via a PC.

You are mistaken about the meaning of "rhetorical question".

a question asked solely to produce an effect or to make an assertion and not to elicit a reply, as “What is so rare as a day in June?”

Having limited ISP bandwidth, is there a way that I could use a Download Manager to DL an episode starting at a certain time-of-night? Thinking to a PC, unless of course there's a way to specify a time-of-night to my S3?

Peter000

I've never downloaded anything to the PC... Just to TiVo. And there's no way to specify the time for that, other than for me it starts about 10-15 minutes after I order it. So you could order it at about the time you want it to download.

Yes, why do they do that? Does CC add that much to the file size? I can't imagine how.

It's why I won't be spending more than a dollar or two for a download. Certainly not $15 to "purchase" a CC-less movie.

I totally understand, Gray. It's annoying enough to me, even though I don't "need" CC. I just use them occasionally when a bit of dialog is unclear.

I wonder if there is some sort of technical issue with the closed captioning, or if it's an issue of having to pay extra to whoever did the closed captioning for the rights to those.

Either way, I hope they eventually add CC to Amazon Unbox downloads.

I never noticed that till last night. I wanted to know the actors in BW and pressed the info button and it noted that no CC information was included. That's moronically stupid and a huge tactical error. I almost never used them but once in a while they're great for figuring out what a masked piece of dialog said.

Doesn't show up there, but if you search Unbox, or link off the first post in this thread, you can download it, and the price is $0.00. Works 'cause I downloaded it to my S3 for free yesterday.

Watched them because I was home yesterday prostrate with back pain. The video quality was quite good, I'd say approximately DVD quality. Much better than I expected. I was expecting Sci Fi style quality, in other words pixelated. It wasn't. Definitely good enough to watch now if you are impatient.

Who else from Band of Brothers was in Life other than Major Winters?

BW's closing credits were hilarious.

Well I went to download Journeyman. First Amazon prompted me for my billing address and credit card info to "purchase" this $0.00 episode. After that BS, their player installer package decided to automatically install Windows Media Player 10 on my system without giving me an obvious warning or prompt to stop it (maybe it was in that banal user license agreement that nobody ever reads.) THEN they decide their player will load automatically by default when my PC starts... This is one freaking annoying way to distribute video.

Just got through watching Journeyman. Very interesting. Reminds me of Tru Calling, but still...I loved the ending.

Michael Cudlitz, he played Bull in Band Of Brothers.

You can avoid installing anything on your PC by sending it to your TiVo instead, assuming your model supports Unbox.

Note that the Bionic Woman pilot leaked earlier is a bit different than the final version.

Just watched LIFE. Excellent! I was pleasantly suprised. Count me in for a season pass. I wish more networks would catch on to this promotion. I have plenty of time to watch pilots now when there is nothing else on. I would have probally skipped this normally-but now I'm dying to see more.

Just watched Journeyman. Now THAT show is definitely filmed in San Francisco which I dig. A little uneven, but I did enjoy the ending and the twist about halfway through. I'm interested enough to tune in to see what happens next.

I thought Life was kinda meh. The zen spouting cop kinda got on my nerves. To me it only got interesting at the end when he had his wall of investigation.

And the woman that played the detective's boss, was that Calamity Jane from Deadwood?

Precisely. Why would I download the SD letterboxed edition when my TiVo will already pick up the show, in HD, when it airs?

That's an easy one for me.

1.) Just to check out the quality of Unbox even in SD Letterboxed (like watching it on a 42" widescreen as oppose to 56" widescreen) and image quality was better than a broadcast digital SD feed. I only wished my set w/ HDMI let me zoom in. I'll have to try this later w/ component and zoom in and compare the quality vs the actual pilot.
2.) Be able to tell others about the show before it airs.
3.) Nothing better to do

The Big Bang Theory pilot is available for free download from Amazon Unbox now. I don't remember seeing it before.

The Big Bang Theory pilot was downloaded to most TiVos already, via the showcase.

Just finished watching the five free premiers. Hard to believe that Bionic Woman was the worse of the bunch. Have no idea where they are going to go with that show. Life has good possibilities along with Journey Man.

I would have to rank them:

1. Life
2. Journey Man
3. Chuck
4. Big Bang Theory
5. Bionic Woman

I have not watched Big Bang Theory, but I agree with your order otherwise. Bionic Woman was the show I was most looking forward to but it definitely was overshadowed by the other pilots. Life in my opinion was terrific!
