I'm 25 (soon to be 26). I'm not in MTV's demo and it's no longer a channel I watch. I think I finally realized I'm over the hill in their eyes that when I realized I'm not familiar with most of the nominees.

This was just awful. I would have better spent my time watching flies land on poo.

+1 almost exactly (well half way to 26:D)
But I haven't watched MTV since high school.
My friend asked me if I watched The Hills on MTV, I had to do everything I could to not burst out laughing.
Another convo I had with him
Me - "I can't wait til I get the more DirecTV HD channels including MTVHD"
Him - "Why, all they do is basically play music"
Me - "Yeah that's why I want it, it is MUSICtv"

+1.
Although come to think of it they have movie awards without showing movies. :)
I didn't bother to watch this, even though I had read about it before. I figured anything of interest would be available online. And Britney's non-comeback was.

My sentiments exactly. Is there any station that shows videos anymore?

I watched 3 minutes of it at first. I flipped back one other time in the middle of it and couldn't figure out what was going on. A true sign of my getting older. Last year I was able to watch part of it by recording and fast forwarding. I guess I have moved into the VH1 demographic.
Although I would like to thank all of those artists and MTV folk who infused a bunch of money into our local economy over the weekend, keeps me from paying state income tax.

That's why I laughed when, the only time I actually had this on, was when Justin Timberlake won and said in his speach, MTV should go back to videos, no one cares about Simpons reality TV.

Infact he said it twice.

Ok, I thought the show itself was not as bad as it could have been. But a straight awards show with some musical acts thrown in would be better imho. The problem with their declining ratings over the years wasn't the awards show itself, it was the fact that they didn't play the videos in the first place so nobody had any interest. Did you notice there were like 10 videos total in the crop of nominees? Its because that's about how much music they play.
Plus, was it just me or was this a complete hip-hop VMA's? They completely ignored (except for a VERY few nominations) all other categories. I think the last few years have seen a good crop of rock artists so its a shame they weren't represented at all. That sentiment was also displayed when Mary J Blige (wasn't it her?) was announcing Dr Dre and said he was "the most important producer of our time". I mean come on! I will definitely say he is important, and I have a lot of respect for him as a producer and what he's acomplished. But to call him the "most important produce or all time" could only be done with a completely Hip-hop centric view of the entertainment business (not that it doesn't seem to be taking over which is another rant).
Just to show I have SOME street cred though (LOL): MAD PROPS to JT for his "play more videos" shout-out! Not to mention his "I don't want to see another Simpsons reality show" comment. Go Justin!
Oh, and the WORST part of all (since nobody has mentioned it yet), Britney Spears: What a train wreck! She completely exemplified her current tabloid image. Trashy, dazed, un-inspired. It was like she was walking through her moves and mouthing (not singing/syncing) her lyrics. It was SO BAD! Most artists give a better performance in a sound check!
On the plus side, I went to the palms (checked out the Playboy Club and Moon woohoo) on my last visit to Vegas and all those shots of the casino, and the towers just made me want to go back even more!

Wasn't mentioned here because it was SO BAD, it warranted it's own thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=365554&page=4&pp=30)

The show sucked. Way to much busy, flashy stuff all over the place: lighting, graphics, etc. I guess this was the Vegas theme, but it was hard on the eyes. Terrible audio and video quality on all of those "club" segments.
Dr. Dre was SWOLE! Do you think he's on steroids?

Yes. My girlfriend and I both thought he had one of those padded muscle shirts on at first.

I used to enjoy MTV on occasion when I was 16, and Britney was hot.
Now I'm 25, wondering where the music went, and why the music that remains has no musicality.

I have been out of the MTV demo for about 15 years although I do channel surf through there just to see if there is any video(when they actually play one) I might want to watch. That never seems to be the case but I still torture myself by going to that channel on occasion.
Even VH1 has become a place where I don't know many of the artists that are on there. It seems ever since VH1 Classic started, I have decreased my watching of VH1 which wasn't that often anyways. My tastes have also moved to country music where they still actually play music videos so all is not lost with me.

We're all TIVO owners aren't we ??? All of these channels play music vids through the night. I typically record VH1's Fresh and Nocturnal State, Fuse's night videos and MTV's Subterranean
That's around 10 hours per night, good use of FF and I discover lots of new music.

That would require too much active effort on our parts to seek out this junk. MTV used to (and really should if they are going to keep the moniker) a place were except for some deviations here and there I could turn my TV to it whenever I wasn't otherwise watching something and see some videos. I'm not really a video junkie such that I want to track them down.
Thank goodness we have "The Tube" now. One of our local affiliates turned their second digital sub-channel into "The Tube". I'm not sure the specifics of it but it appears to be an syndicated all music videos channel. And they have a pretty good selection of music (sorta VH1-ish) even if it isn't that deep.
That's the channel I'll turn the TV to now adays for background noise (yes, I know Dtv has music channels but sometimes I want background pictures to..lol).

The Viacom empire is ruining CMT too, with a bunch of stupid reality shows. I watch it less often and switched to GAC.
I love The Tube.

That's true but I also have the CMT Pure Country channel and that is much better. Sometimes, I watch The Tube but don't watch it often. I do like that they have more live concert videos then the other channels.

Couldn't tell you the last time I watched the VMAs...didn't even know it was on until I heard Howard Stern laughing about it this morning.

+1 to Fuse. Though they play movies and have some nonsense shows, they still play a lot of music.
I recorded the thing but flipped to it for like 5-10 minutes. It was very sloppy and the production didn't look all that great (didn't help that normal cable looks like ass).
